What is an Internship Search Fund?

An Internship Search Fund is a position where interns assist entrepreneurs or investors in identifying, evaluating, and acquiring small to medium-sized businesses, typically as part of the search fund model. This role allows interns to gain hands-on experience in deal sourcing, financial analysis, market research, and due diligence. It's an excellent opportunity for students interested in private equity, entrepreneurship, or investment banking to learn about the acquisition process while contributing to real investment decisions.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an internship at a search fund?

Interns often work closely with the fund's principals and may have direct exposure to entrepreneurs and business owners. The role is typically fast-paced and requires adaptability, as priorities can shift quickly based on deal flow. Additionally, you'll likely collaborate with other interns and external professionals, providing a great opportunity to learn about mergers and acquisitions and gain hands-on experience in private equity.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Search Fund Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Search Fund Associate, you typically need strong analytical skills, financial modeling proficiency, and knowledge of business fundamentals, often supported by coursework in finance, economics, or business. Familiarity with tools such as Excel, CRM systems, and databases, as well as experience with market research platforms, is highly beneficial. Effective communication, networking abilities, and resourcefulness are crucial soft skills that help in sourcing deals and building relationships with business owners. These competencies are essential for identifying acquisition opportunities and driving successful outcomes in the highly competitive search fund environment.
