Job description

This internship opportunity is only available to graduate students currently enrolled at select APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institutions: Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia. Applications from students outside of these academic institutions will not be considered.

About the Office & Position:

EDI Executive Office

The EDI Program Support and Operations Intern will support the EDI Executive Office while gaining hands-on experience in the coordination and implementation of equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives. The intern will assist with project tracking, meeting coordination, research, and development of materials that support key programs, including the EDI Framework and related efforts. This role is designed as a learning opportunity, providing exposure to how large-scale initiatives are managed across a national organization. The intern will build skills in organization, communication, and translating ideas into actionable work.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Support coordination of EDI initiatives, including scheduling meetings, tracking follow-ups, and assisting with day-to-day operations
  • Assist in planning and execution of projects, convenings, and events (e.g., summits, think tanks, stakeholder meetings)
  • Conduct background research and synthesize findings to support program development and strategic discussions
  • Prepare materials (briefs, summaries, presentations) for internal and external stakeholders
  • Help organize project documents, timelines, and trackers across key initiatives (e.g., REAP, partnerships, special projects)
  • Interns will generally be expected to work for a minimum of 10 hours (including approximately 1 hour of Internal Internship Programming) per week. Specific hour-to-academic credit ratios will be agreed upon between the internโ€™s university and the APA hiring team.

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate program (e.g., psychology, public health, public policy, social sciences, or related field)
  • Demonstrated interest in equity, diversity, and inclusion, health equity, or social impact work
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work collaboratively in a team environment"

Required Qualifications:

  • Deepen understanding of how equity, diversity, and inclusion strategies are developed and operationalized within complex organizations
  • Strengthen ability to think critically about the application of psychological science to real-world equity and social impact challenges
  • Build capacity to translate ideas and insights into approaches that inform programs, partnerships, and initiatives
  • Gain exposure to cross-sector collaboration and the role of stakeholder engagement in advancing organizational priorities
  • Develop a broader perspective on how large-scale initiatives contribute to systems-level change
  • We are currently only accepting applications only for interns who are (1) in graduate school [Masterโ€™s or PhD], (2) able to receive academic credit from their school for their internship; (3) able to commit to a full year [September 2026-May 2027]; and (4) living/working in an APA-approved state (Internships at APA).
  • Enrollment at an APA Internal Internship Program academic partner institution (Howard University, Montclair State University, or University of Virginia) is required.
