Internship Remote 3D Printing positions are primarily learning roles with remote work, ideal for students or beginners. In contrast, 3D Printing Technicians are more experienced, hands-on roles often requiring technical skills and on-site presence. Both roles are essential in the 3D printing industry but serve different career stages and responsibilities.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a remote 3D printing internship?

During a remote 3D printing internship, you will likely be involved in various stages of the 3D printing process, such as designing models using CAD software, preparing files for printing, troubleshooting printer issues remotely, and collaborating with team members through virtual meetings. Interns often assist with prototyping, quality checks, and documenting workflows. Being remote, you'll also gain experience using digital communication and project management tools, working closely with engineers or designers to support ongoing projects and learn industry best practices.

What is an Internship Remote 3D Printing position?

An Internship Remote 3D Printing position allows students or early-career professionals to gain practical experience in 3D printing technologies while working from a location outside the traditional office or lab. Interns typically work on tasks such as designing 3D models, operating 3D printers (often remotely or via simulation software), and assisting with project development. This type of internship is ideal for individuals interested in additive manufacturing, CAD design, and learning how 3D printing is applied in various industries—all while enjoying the flexibility of remote work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Remote 3D Printing Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Remote 3D Printing Intern, you need a basic understanding of 3D modeling, familiarity with additive manufacturing concepts, and enrollment in a relevant academic program such as engineering or industrial design. Experience with CAD software (like SolidWorks or Fusion 360), slicing programs, and sometimes knowledge of specific 3D printer platforms are typically required. Initiative, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help interns collaborate effectively and solve design challenges remotely. These skills are essential for producing accurate prototypes, learning quickly in a remote setting, and contributing to innovative product development.

Job description

Do you want to change how the world creates?

At Formlabs, we're building the tools that make it possible for anyone to bring their ideas to life, from cutting-edge products to life-saving medical devices. Our 3D printing technology powers innovation at more than 50,000 industry leaders worldwide, including Apple, Google, Tesla, New Balance, and NASA. Together, we're helping everyone design, prototype, and manufacture faster than ever before.

We're a team of hands-on builders, engineers, and innovators reinventing how the world makes physical things. If you're ready to shape the future of fabrication, come build it with us.

Software is at the heart of all aspects of Formlabs products. We aim to bring ground-breaking 3D printers to the desks and shops of designers, artists, and professionals the world over. Our software is integral to ensuring exceptional experiences with our products as it bridges the transition from digital models to beautiful physical form in 3D printing.

We are looking for a Embedded Software Engineer for our Embedded team with a user focused mindset and strong technical background. Our embedded team is the essential component that ties software, hardware and electronics together that pushes the limits of 3D printing. They are responsible for designing and implementing our firmware.

The tech stack: C++, Python, Embedded Linux, and the occasional dip into Javascript.

You:

  • Have professional experience writing code that lives on hardware products in the consumer, medical, defense, or industrial space for somewhere between 5 and 100 years of your life.
  • Program with modern languages used for embedded software stacks, ideally in C, C++, and/or Python
  • Easily implement common embedded software architecture patterns for things like filtering, control loops, and remote procedure calls
  • Architect code that your fellow software engineers are excited to use and re-use
  • Have familiarity and comfort debugging complex hardware and software interactions.
  • Distill complex things simply when communicating with non-software stakeholders.

The Job:

  • Design, build, test, and ship development tools and prototype code for your fellow R&D engineers working on new, unlaunched Formlabs products.
  • Design, build, test and ship code for new printer features to the tens of thousands of Formlabs devices in the field
  • Ensure code re-use with a strong focus on maintainability, testing and CI
  • Collaborate with different stakeholders (product managers, designers) to ensure we build the right features for our customers, existing and future.
  • Work in a product-focused, agile environment onsite in our Somerville, MA office.

Our Perks & Benefits:

  • Robust equity program to build future wealth through RSUs
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage (Medical, Dental, Vision)
  • Low cost fund options in our 401K and access to advisors
  • Generous paid Parental Leave (up to 16 weeks)
  • Tenure-based paid Sabbatical Leave (up to 6 weeks)
  • Flexible Out of Office Plan - Take time when you need it
  • Ample on-site parking & pre-tax commuter benefits
  • Healthy on-site lunches, snacks, beverages, & treats
  • Regular sponsored professional development opportunities
  • Many opt-in culture events across our diverse community
  • And of course... unlimited 3D prints
