What does an internship prosthetic design engineer do?

An Internship Prosthetic Design Engineer assists in designing and developing prosthetic limbs and devices under the supervision of experienced engineers. Their responsibilities typically include creating 3D models, conducting research on materials and biomechanics, participating in prototype testing, and collaborating with clinical teams to understand patient needs. This role provides hands-on experience in biomedical engineering, CAD software, and the medical device development process, preparing interns for future careers in prosthetics or related fields.

What kinds of projects or tasks can an internship prosthetic design engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Internship Prosthetic Design Engineer, you will often participate in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with the design and prototyping of prosthetic devices, performing CAD modeling, and conducting material testing. You may also help with user feedback sessions, collaborate closely with clinical teams and experienced engineers, and contribute to documentation or research on new technologies. The role typically offers exposure to both the technical and clinical aspects of prosthetics, providing valuable practical experience and mentorship opportunities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship prosthetic design engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Prosthetic Design Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical or biomedical engineering, 3D modeling, and basic biomechanics, often supported by coursework or relevant project experience. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), rapid prototyping tools, and possibly experience with 3D printing are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively make candidates stand out in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for developing functional, user-centered prosthetic devices that meet both engineering standards and patient needs.

Responsibilities

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for utility equipment throughout the product lifecycle, focusing on performance, reliability, quality, safety, and cost.
  • Develop and implement design enhancements that optimize product functionality and manufacturability.
  • Create and refine mechanical designs, including sheet metal components and assemblies, using SolidWorks and other CAD tools.
  • Support new product development activities from concept through prototype and production release.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Service, Supply Chain, and Product Management teams to ensure designs meet operational and customer requirements.
  • Participate in prototype build activities and provide engineering support during testing and validation.
  • Use finite element analysis (FEA) and other engineering tools to evaluate and improve design robustness.
  • Contribute to resolving product issues in the field and implement design changes that enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Document design changes and maintain accurate engineering records and models.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development and mentorship opportunities to expand engineering skills and explore related disciplines.

The dress code follows a 'dress for your day' approach, with jeans worn the majority of the time and a polo-style shirt or similar professional casual top. The culture emphasizes a family-like environment within a large organization, offering advanced engineering training, mentorship programs, and access to internal development resources and online learning platforms. Employees have opportunities to get involved in social and recreational activities, such as company sports leagues.
