Job description

Position: Career Technical Educator (Construction)
Location: Sheridan High School 200 days
Reports to: Principal 
Salary Range:  $84,000 - $119,000

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Sheridan High School is seeking a highly motivated and skilled Construction Trades and Engineering Teacher to deliver a comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for entry-level employment in the construction industry and/or post-secondary education in construction- and engineering-related fields. The successful candidate will inspire students through hands-on learning, practical application of construction theory, and a strong emphasis on safety.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Curriculum Development:

  • Develop and implement engaging lesson plans aligned with Colorado CTE Construction standards.
  • Integrate theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on projects in a safe learning environment.

Instructional Delivery:

Teach a wide range of construction-related topics, including:

  • Basic construction math and blueprint reading
  • Tool safety and usage
  • Framing techniques
  • Roofing and siding installation
  • Basic electrical and plumbing systems
  • Concrete work
  • Interior finishing techniques

Hands-on Learning and Safety Emphasis:

  • Supervise students during lab activities and real-world construction projects.
  • Ensure proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.:
  • Promote and enforce rigorous safety protocols, including PPE use and hazard identification.

Industry Partnerships:

  • Collaborate with local construction companies to arrange guest speakers, field trips, internships, apprenticeships, and job-shadowing opportunities.
  • Develop, organize, and implement field trips, job shadowing experiences, and industry visits for students, providing hands-on exposure to career pathways and real-world workplace environments.
  • Coordinate with local businesses, industry partners, and school staff to ensure meaningful, safe, and educational experiences that support students' career readiness.

Student Support, Assessment, and Evaluation:

  • Assess student competency through practical demonstrations, written assessments, and project evaluations.
  • Provide individualized guidance on academic progress, career planning, and post-graduation PATHWAYS.

PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain and monitor inventory of tools, materials, and other construction supplies in the CTE building, ensuring resources are properly stored, accounted for, and readily available for instructional and student use.
  • Actively coach the SkillsUSA student organization to develop leadership and teamwork skills (some travel required).
  • Participate in CTE activities and meet all state reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all school and district policies.
  • Attend staff meetings and engage in collaborative planning with colleagues.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must possess a current State of Colorado Secondary CTE Architecture and Construction Credential and/or CTE Engineering Credential, or ability to obtain within the first year of employment.
  • Proven hands-on experience in the construction industry.
  • Strong knowledge of current building codes and safety regulations.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Colorado teaching license
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Building Trades, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience supervising students in a lab or workshop environment.
  • Prior experience in secondary education or CTE programs.
  • Knowledge of emerging construction technologies.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Clear CBI/FBI background check and clean driving record required.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull 5 to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Capable of sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor activities.
  • Manual dexterity and near/far vision for operating tools and equipment.

CLEARANCE:
Must clear background check through the CBI and the FBI through Fingerprint submission.
SALARY:
Placement on Administrative Salary Schedule, based upon previous related experience.
BENEFITS:
Employees who are scheduled to work 30 or more hours per week are eligible to obtain district health benefits which include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance and supplemental benefits.  Positions that qualify for health benefits also qualify for leave which could include vacation and daily leave to be determined by the position and number of days assigned.  Sheridan School District No. 2 is a public employer and participates in the Colorado Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA). All employees are required by statute to contribute 11% of salary on a pre-tax basis to PERA.
