How much do internship optician jobs pay per hour?

As of Sep 12, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship optician in the United States is $19.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $21.39 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an internship optician?

Internship opticians are individuals who are undergoing practical training in the field of opticianry, typically as part of their educational program or licensure requirements. They work under the supervision of licensed opticians or eye care professionals to gain hands-on experience in tasks such as fitting and dispensing eyeglasses, assisting with contact lens fittings, and providing customer service. The internship allows them to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings, develop technical skills, and understand the day-to-day responsibilities of an optician. Completing an internship is often a crucial step towards becoming a fully licensed optician.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect during an internship optician role?

As an Optician intern, you can expect to gain practical experience in assisting with eyeglass fittings, performing basic vision tests, and helping clients select eyewear. You'll work closely with licensed opticians and other eye care professionals, learning about lens prescriptions, frame adjustments, and customer service best practices. Interns often rotate through different duties, giving you insight into both the technical and retail aspects of optical care. This exposure provides a solid foundation for pursuing certification and future roles in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship optician?

To thrive as an Internship Optician, you need a basic understanding of optical science, anatomy of the eye, and customer service, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of an opticianry program. Familiarity with lensometers, pupilometers, and optical dispensing software is important for daily tasks. Strong interpersonal communication, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn are standout soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for accurately assisting clients, ensuring proper eyewear fitting, and contributing to a positive customer experience in a clinical setting.

What is the difference between Internship Optician vs Licensed Optician?

AspectInternship OpticianLicensed Optician
CredentialsTypically in training, no full licensure requiredMust have state licensure and certification
Work EnvironmentAssisting licensed opticians, learning on the jobPerforming full optician duties independently
Industry UsageEntry-level position, training phaseFull professional role in optical stores or labs

The main difference is that an Internship Optician is in training and does not hold full licensure, while a Licensed Optician has completed certification and can perform all duties independently. Internships serve as a stepping stone toward becoming a licensed professional in the optical industry.

Do internship opticians get paid a lot?

Internship opticians typically receive modest pay or stipends, as internships are often designed for training and gaining experience rather than high compensation. The pay can vary based on location, employer, and whether the internship is paid or unpaid, but generally, it is lower than full-time optician salaries.

Is there a demand for internship opticians?

Internship opticians are in demand as optical retail and healthcare sectors seek trained assistants to support licensed optometrists and ophthalmologists. The role provides valuable experience in lens fitting, customer service, and optical equipment, often leading to full-time positions in the field. Demand varies by region but generally remains steady due to ongoing needs for eye care services.
