Job description

Overview

Under the supervision of a Licensed Optician an Apprentice Optician assists patients in ordering eyeglasses and lenses. Adjusts, fits, and dispenses eyeglasses and contacts. Determines multifocal measurements . An Apprentice Optician is an Optical Technician as well as a Retail Sales Consultant. S/he must be trained in technical aspects of an Optician as well as have the skills to sell all the current fashion products available today.

Position Reports To: Optical/Practice Manager


Responsibilities

  1. Assists patients with choosing eyeglass frames and lens options appropriate to the prescription.

  2. Measures patient’s eyes for pupillary distance to determine multifocal placement.

  3. Fits and adjusts lenses to eyeglass frames.

  4. Conduct contact lens fittings as appropriate. Refer to physician as needed and for the completion of fitting. In accordance with WAC 246-852 & RCW 18.34.

  5. Orders patient prescriptions and process sales.

  6. Dispense contact lens and eyeglasses.

  7. Triage questions and concerns regarding prescriptions, merchandise, and services. Refers to licensed optician or physician when appropriate.

  8. Stocks department equipment, merchandise, and supplies. Follows department procedures and standards for production, record keeping, merchandising and merchandise storage.

  9. Contact lens and eyeglasses sales, including determining lenses and frames best suited to patient.

  10. Maintain and clean dispensary sales areas. Updates displays and promotions as necessary.

  11. Assist with clerical duties, insurance billing and accounts payable.

  12. Collects payment for merchandise; makes change; processes checks, credit, and debit charges according to proper departmental procedures for paperwork and the performance of duties.

  13. Participate in professional development activities to maintain current skills and stay abreast of industry trends.

  14. Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.

  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.


Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Basic sales experience.
  • Valid Apprentice Optician Dispensing Registration or obtain upon hire.
  • Register Apprentice to Licensed Optician upon hire.
  • Must have good written and oral communication skills.


Desired:

  • Previous optical sales.
  • Knowledge of retail optical shop industry.
