Job description

Deliver the online 7-week asynchronous “Core Instructional Practices” course and interact with 12-20 students enrolled in the course. Learners are aiming to teach world languages in a wide variety of instructional contexts – primary schools, secondary schools, community colleges, adult schools, Saturday schools, and private online instruction. This role involves giving substantial, personalized feedback to learners on all assignments, drawing on personal experiences and professional knowledge related to enacting language instruction, particularly within the context of ACTFL High-Leverage Teaching Practices (Glisan & Donato), ACTFL World Readiness Standards. The course is already built, but you will be responsible to personalize the instruction and provide feedback on discussion boards, smaller assignments, and larger assessment projects submitted in the course.

Pay:

The total compensation for delivering this course is $8000.

Core Responsibilities:

  • ​Record and post a short video introduction to each module, including your relationship to the content and describing the learning goals for the module
  • Respond to student input on Canvas in a thoughtful, thorough and timely manner
  • Assess student performances in a way which cultivates their knowledge, skills and dispositions related to the subject matter
  • Availability for virtual office hours with students who want to engage with the instructor in real time
  • Calculate a grade for the course for students on an ongoing basis, and enters the final grade for the course into Banner

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree conferred in the area they are teaching
  • Graduate-student level proficiency (C2/Superior) in English required
  • Experience teaching languages other than English to English-speaking learners
  • Experience teaching online courses is preferred.
  • Participation in Middlebury DLINQ mentoring relationship for teachers of online asynchronous courses if this is the first time teaching an online asynchronous course through Middlebury
  • Proficiency in Canvas as a platform for delivering instruction and Banner for engaging with student records
  • Proficiency in tools for producing and socially annotating video and audio files for responding to students
  • Deep familiarity with ACTFL High Leverage Teaching Practices, ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, and ACTFL 21st Century World Readiness Standards

Physical Demands & Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time.
