What does an internship oil rig mechanical engineer do?

An Internship Oil Rig Mechanical Engineer assists experienced engineers in maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving mechanical systems on oil rigs. Their responsibilities often include inspecting equipment, supporting repair and maintenance work, learning safety protocols, and participating in project planning. Interns gain hands-on experience with machinery such as pumps, engines, and drilling equipment while developing their technical and problem-solving skills. They also learn about industry standards and the importance of safety and environmental regulations on oil rigs.

What types of hands-on projects or tasks can an internship oil rig mechanical engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Oil Rig Mechanical Engineer intern, you can expect to be involved in a variety of hands-on projects such as assisting with equipment maintenance, troubleshooting mechanical systems, and supporting the installation or inspection of machinery on the rig. Interns often work closely with senior engineers and technicians, gaining exposure to real-world challenges like ensuring safety compliance and minimizing equipment downtime. This role typically involves a mix of fieldwork and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, providing valuable practical experience that is essential for future career growth in the oil and gas industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship oil rig mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Oil Rig Mechanical Engineer, you need a strong foundation in mechanical engineering principles, hydraulics, and equipment maintenance, often supported by progress toward a relevant engineering degree. Job description

#jobalert | DIRECT HIRE | MECHANICAL ENGINEER | INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING | Tulsa Metro

Our client manufactures custom-engineered equipment for oil & gas applications and advanced manufacturing facilities. They're adding a Mechanical Engineer to a tenured team to keep pace with project volume. You'd own projects end to end — initial customer quote through detailed design and fabrication support. A hands-on seat, not one narrow piece of a much larger machine.

  • Anticipated $110K-$150K, dependent on experience level
  • Full suite of benefits: Health/Dental/Vision, HSA, Life, etc.
  • Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)

Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate customer-supplied data (3D CAD files, drawings, scopes of work, quality documents) to define engineering requirements for quoting and detailed design.
  • Develop and redline P&IDs to communicate project requirements to estimating and drafting.
  • Perform equipment sizing calculations using process simulation software and in-house engineering tools.
  • Perform code calculations for pressure vessels, piping, control valves, relief valves, and pressure regulators.
  • Review and approve 3D models and drawings for assigned projects against engineering standards.
  • Engage directly with customers, project managers, and the commercial team to resolve scope gaps and flag scope changes.
  • Own assigned projects from the proposal/quote stage through detailed engineering and into fabrication support.
  • Work across mechanical, process, and structural considerations rather than one narrow discipline.

Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Petroleum, Electrical, or Instrumentation Engineering from an ABET-accredited university — or equivalent hands-on design/engineering experience for candidates with 15+ years in the field.
  • 3-5+ years of engineering experience in a manufacturing environment producing engineered-to-order equipment.
  • Working knowledge of ASME, API, NFPA, and ANSI codes and standards.
  • Experience specifying and designing process control systems combining pneumatic, electro-mechanical, and electronic devices.
  • Experience applying NFPA requirements for electrical area classification.
  • Direct experience with pressure vessel and piping code calculations in a fabrication-shop setting, not a pure design/consulting environment.
  • Comfort working across disciplines — mechanical, process, and enough structural/electrical judgment to keep a project moving without handoffs to multiple specialists.
  • Experience owning a project from proposal/quote through fabrication support, rather than handing it off after design.

KEYWORDS: mechanical engineer, ASME Section VIII Division 1, pressure vessel design, B31.3 piping, process equipment design, engineer to order, ETO manufacturing, oil and gas equipment, skid design, P&ID development, process simulation software, code calculations, exchanger design, pressure relief valve sizing, control valve sizing, structural design review, drafting review, ABET accredited engineering degree, chemical engineer, electrical engineer, instrumentation engineer, Wyoming manufacturing jobs, production equipment manufacturing
