Job description

Position Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer

Department: Drilling Technology Development

Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Reports to: Director, Drilling Technology Development

Role Description

We're looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to join our technology development team. This role focuses on the design and development of new surface and downhole equipment for drilling deep geothermal wells.

The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys solving practical engineering problems and taking ownership of projects from initial concept through field testing and commercialization. You'll work closely with manufacturers, suppliers, and other engineering disciplines within Eavor to develop equipment that performs reliably in demanding environments.

This is a hands-on engineering role. Some days you'll be designing in CAD, other days you'll be at the shop testing equipment, assembling prototypes, overseeing manufacturing or on a drilling rig commissioning new equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop surface and downhole mechanical systems for geothermal drilling applications.
  • Lead projects from concept through detailed design, prototyping, testing, field trials, and commercialization.
  • Prepare models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Work with operations personnel to identify problems and develop practical solutions.
  • Support prototype assembly, testing, troubleshooting, and field deployment.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturers during fabrication and product development.
  • Evaluate field performance and implement design improvements.
  • Contribute to the development of new intellectual property.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and design records.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologists with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Eligible for registration with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or Professional Licensee.
  • Minimum 10 years of mechanical design experience.
  • Strong CAD skills using SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor.
  • Experience developing products from concept through commercialization.
  • Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong practical problem-solving skills and a willingness to take ownership of projects.

Preferred

  • Experience working for an oilfield service company.
  • Hands-on field experience supporting operations.
  • Experience designing downhole tools or other oilfield equipment.
  • Coiled tubing experience is considered an asset.
  • Experience working with high-pressure systems and rotating machinery.
  • Listed as an inventor on patents or a demonstrated history of developing and commercializing innovative products.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We're looking for someone who enjoys building new technology rather than maintaining existing products.

The right person is practical, resourceful, and comfortable working in an environment where priorities can change quickly. They take initiative, work well with minimal direction, and aren't afraid to get involved in testing equipment in the shop or the field.

This role is well suited to someone who enjoys taking an idea, developing a working prototype, improving it through testing, and ultimately delivering a product that can be manufactured and used in the field.
