Job Description:
AMA is currently accepting applications for summer intern positions supporting the NASA Computational Aerosciences Branch (TNA) at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC) in Mountain View, California.
These internships provide an opportunity to contribute to a broad range of technical efforts in support of aerospace research and advanced computational methods. Depending on project needs and the intern's background, assignments may include work in areas such as computational fluid dynamics (CFD), GPU software development, scientific computing, data analysis and visualization, graphical user interface (GUI) development, and AI/ML approaches for fluid dynamics and related engineering applications.
Interns will work closely with NASA and AMA technical staff on research-oriented projects involving software development, numerical methods, simulation workflows, computational performance, and engineering analysis.
Possible Areas of Work Include:
  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) research and development
  • GPU acceleration and performance optimization of scientific software
  • Scientific computing and numerical methods
  • Data processing, post-processing, and visualization
  • GUI and workflow tool development for engineering and research applications
  • AI/ML methods applied to fluid dynamics, modeling, or scientific datasets
  • Software testing, validation, and automation for simulation workflows

Responsibilities may include:
  • Supporting research and development activities in computational aerosciences
  • Assisting with implementation, enhancement, and testing of scientific software tools
  • Running simulations, analyzing results, and preparing plots or summaries
  • Developing scripts, utilities, or prototype software capabilities
  • Contributing to technical presentations, reports, or documentation
  • Collaborating with researchers and engineers in a team-based environment

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field
  • Coursework, project experience, or research experience in one or more relevant technical areas
  • Programming experience in languages such as Python, C, C++, Fortran, CUDA, or similar
  • Familiarity with scientific computing, engineering analysis, software development, or related computational methods
  • Strong analytical, communication, and teamwork skills

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with CFD, fluid mechanics, numerical methods, HPC, or GPU programming
  • Experience with GUI development, visualization tools, or interactive software workflows
  • Familiarity with machine learning, data-driven methods, or AI applications in engineering
  • Experience working in Linux-based computing environments
  • Strong interest in aerospace research and advanced simulation technologies

Additional Information:
  • These internships are typically 10-12 weeks in duration
  • Onsite only at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC)
  • Candidates must be either U.S. Citizens or Foreign Nationals with current U.S. work authorization valid for the full internship period (for example, OPT or similar authorization)

Compensation:
The expected hourly pay range for this position is $29.50-$33.50, depending on education, experience, and other relevant factors.
