The responsibilities include mine engineering. Including surveying and mapping, capital projects, ground control, ventilation, basic mine construction, and assistance with quality assurance. The responsibilities also include collecting and analyzing geologic data, such as collecting QC samples, geologic modeling, trending and predicting. The position will supervise interns, technicians, and contractors. The position will work closely with the mine supervisor, shift supervisors, and mine manager in technical support of the operation. The position will also be responsible for ground support monitoring (bore scoping, roof inspection, probe drilling, profiling, etc.) and notifying the mining team of issues or observed trends. The position will support routine QC and geologic data collection and record keeping and work with the quality department to ensure acceptable kiln feed. This position will function as the "step-up" leader when needed to direct the mining employees or contractors.

RESPONSIBILITIES & EXPECTATIONS:

Champion Safety in ALL aspect of job performance, including leading safety inspections and training. Responsible for Mapping and Surveying function:

  • Coordinate survey control and oversee alignment checks, either personally or utilizing existing resources. Ensuring mapping and survey information is conducted in accordance with LNA standards and is properly archived.
  • Updating and publishing of the mine map(s) on a routine basis
  • Provide three dimensional locations of the mine workings, infrastructure, seam / zone contacts to ensure mining activity accuracy.
  • Preparation of periodic (monthly) volumetric and planimetric reports in all active working areas and ore stockpiles for reconciliation (include truck factors, ratio, and other key performance indicators).
  • Survey and track quality control data to define ore zone contact to drive improved ore recovery.
  • Design, survey and record blast pattern layouts. Keep bench by bench electronic records of blast patterns for future reference and adjacent pattern layout.

Active ownership and involvement in Mine Planning and Reconciliation Process

  • Responsible for updating the Short Term Mine Plan (STMP) and development of the tactical "14 Day Dig Maps" (or Similar) to keep operations on budget targets and within the long term plan.
  • Coordination with Mining Team / Mine Planner to ensure STMP is aligned with Mid Term Mine Plan (MTMP), Long Term Mine Plan (LTMP) planning and reconciliation process
  • Develop weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual mine and waste storage plans.

Communication with Mining Team to ensure that the mine plan is consistent with operating requirements and is in concert with the long term mine plan for the reserve.

  • Working with the geologist, Lab Manager, and related ensure adequate definition of the ore body, identify deficiencies, and coordinate that the mine plan(s) are adapted to the geology.
  • Assure that the mine plan is consistent with the highest standards for health and safety of the mining crews.
  • Assist mine management and operations personnel in adapting the plan to day to day activities.

Operations Engineering

  • Take a leadership role in providing support to mine operational crews and mine supervision.
  • Become capable of filling in for mine supervisors as needed.

Provide Technical support for the development of the Mine Infrastructure

  • Working with mine and maintenance management, ensure that mine infrastructure (power, communications, dewatering, haul roads, etc) is functioning as planned.
  • Provide technical guidance on effective management and planning of mine infrastructure, assist in trouble shooting of infrastructure and larger equipment issues.
  • Help assure that mine infrastructure is compliant with MSHA regulations

Project Management

  • Responsible for carrying a proposed project through detailed engineering to financial closure after construction, including documentation and updating of drawings.
  • Ensure that the project was developed with reasonable assumptions.
  • Ability to initiate and coordinate project discussions within the organization to ensure alignment of expectations.
  • Interface with construction vendor to ensure expected scheduling of project execution to assure all objectives are met including compliance, quality, cost, and schedule.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable design standards to assure compliance and quality.
  • Develop cost estimate or direct the work of an engineering firm to develop the estimate.

Perform other duties as assigned.

ATTRIBUTES:

  • Technical competence in the field is required.

  • Strong written and oral communications skills, presentation skills and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to give constructive guidance to subordinates and team with operating and maintenance personnel.
  • Physically and emotionally able to work in a mine environment (Above ground and/or Underground)
  • Able to respond to work demands at irregular hours. Must be capable of working any shift, on-call, overtime, or seven days a week, if needed.
  • Must be willing to be hands-on and not afraid to perform other work assigned to help the team be successful.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks/projects and meeting all required deadlines.
  • Strong sense of urgency in meeting customer needs.
  • Must have the ability to work independently in order to meet all required deadlines, with strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Must have strong computer skills including MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Must be physically able to perform work assigned.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all plant locations.
  • Tolerate working outside in severe weather conditions as well as exposure to industrial high temperature, noise and dust.
  • Access all areas within a site which could include heights of 120 feet, confined spaces, climbing ladders or stairs, and accessing tunnels.
  • Will be working in both an office environment and in a mining process environment.
  • The employee will be exposed to the following working conditions: Extreme Heat and Cold, Noise, Walking on Uneven Surfaces, Vibration, Oils, and Atmospheric Conditions such as Dust, Fumes, and Metallic Particles.
  • The employee will be required to perform the following actions (from time to time): Standing, walking, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, talking, seeing, hearing and sitting.
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Travel up to 20%

REQUIRED EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in geology, mining, or related engineering / technical degree and/or equivalent proven work experience in the field

PREFFERED EDUCATION:

  • BS / MS in Mining Engineering or Geology

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Must have at least 2-4 years of progressive technical responsibility in surface mining environment. Previous leadership or supervisions experience is a plus.

PREFFERED EXPERIENCE:

  • 4-6 years of previous underground and/or above ground mining and blasting experience.
