What is an Internship Acoustics Intern job?

An Internship Acoustics Intern assists in studying sound and vibration in various environments, focusing on data collection, analysis, and testing. They may work on projects related to noise control, architectural acoustics, or audio engineering. Responsibilities often include using specialized software, conducting measurements, and supporting senior acoustics engineers. This role provides hands-on experience in applying acoustical principles to real-world problems. It is ideal for students or recent graduates pursuing careers in acoustics or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Internship Acoustics Intern position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Acoustics Intern, a solid background in physics, mathematics, and engineering principles, often supported by enrollment in or completion of a related bachelor's program, is essential. Familiarity with acoustic measurement tools, simulation software such as MATLAB or EASE, and basic data analysis techniques is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and learn within multidisciplinary teams. These abilities are crucial for accurately collecting data, generating insights, and contributing to acoustic projects in professional environments.

What kind of projects or daily tasks can I expect as an Acoustics Intern?

As an Acoustics Intern, you can expect to assist with tasks such as setting up and conducting sound measurements, analyzing acoustic data, supporting simulation and modeling efforts, and preparing technical reports or presentations. You'll often collaborate with experienced engineers and participate in group meetings to discuss findings and progress. Depending on the company, you may also have the opportunity to contribute to ongoing research, product development, or real-world noise control projects. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to industry-standard practices and helps you develop both technical and teamwork skills.

At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.

Perform aircraft noise predictions and community noise assessment using acoustic propagation software.

  • Conduct acoustic simulations using tools such as Advanced Acoustic Model, Aviation Environmental Design Tool, and SoundPLAN
  • Perform aircraft acoustic analyses to compare noise sources
  • Develop software framework and data pipeline for acoustic evaluation of new locations
  • Verification and presentation of predictions to guide future operations
  • Develop documentation and presentations to document acoustic impacts for specific infrastructure locations

  • Graduate student in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience with computational aeroacoustics and sound propagation modeling
  • Ability to work in groups and individually
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with stakeholders across a wide range of technical disciplines
  • Knowledge of rotorcraft aerodynamics and acoustics
  • Proficiency with MATLAB and Python

  • Understanding of CFD and FWH methods
  • Understanding of acoustic metrics and acoustic masking
  • Experience with Git/GitHub

Relocation Assistance: This position does not offer relocation assistance. Candidates must live in the immediate area or relocate at their own expense.

The pay range for undergraduate interns, which includes freshman to senior level students, is $22-$31/hr.
