Position Overview

KSL.com seeks just the right person to join our digital news team to edit, manage and develop news content for the largest news outlet in Utah. The full-time position is for an evening editor, 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.

KSL.com news managers take on roles identified by industry titles that include line editor, copy editor, section editor, team leader, content producer, and content manager. The ideal candidate for this position is a journalist who has great news judgment, a passion for news and audience engagement, and a commitment to upholding the brand standards of KSL. The successful candidate will be a self-directed leader driven to innovate and improve and a team player in a hybrid work environment of home and office.

Note: Work configurations are subject to change based on business needs and at company discretion.

  • This position is an hybrid role that requires the employee to sometimes work at our Salt Lake City site. Specific hybrid schedules will be determined based on business needs and evaluated by managers and senior management.

What You Will Do:

Primary job duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with reporters to contribute and develop solid story ideas and content
  • Collaborate with other journalists to identify and implement opportunities for growth
  • Perform context, content and copy editing on staff-written, contributor-written, partner-written and wire-service stories. Editing includes watching closely for bias, unsupported claims or content that is potentially defamatory or counter to Deseret Management Corp. objectives
  • Help build and support a network of freelance contributors
  • Ensure and improve the quality and correctness of content from outside sources
  • Follow and set the standard for the staff on understanding and using AP and DMC style
  • Oversee breaking news by making sureย KSL.comย is first and accurate
  • Help the news director and managers oversee, plan and schedule story assignments and story ideas
  • Mentor interns, as needed

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For:

  • Bring five or more years of professional news writing and/or editing experience
  • Hold a bachelorโ€™s degree, preferably in journalism
  • Exhibit excellent editing abilities
  • Write and edit using Associated Press style
  • Multitask and work under deadline pressure
  • Work well with others on a team and communicate well
  • Ability to stay organized while juggling several tasks at once
  • Willingness to work occasional weekends, holidays and odd hours as the news necessitates
  • Give and receive constructive feedback

Physical Demands

  • Receive, process, and maintain information through oral and/or written communication effectively.
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to operate computer keys and general office equipment. Ability to work on a computer for prolonged periods of time.
  • Sit and/or stand for extended periods of time.

Compensation

$25.00 - $32.00. Hourly rate to be determined by multiple factors including but not limited to evaluation of the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant along with internal equity and alignment with market data.
