QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MLT or MT - ASCP certified or ASCP eligible
  • Generalist experience preferred, with strength in Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis, and Coagulation (preferred but not required)

TRAINING:
  • Training in Corpus Christi, TX is required.

SCHEDULE:
  • Shift: Evenings
  • Primary Schedule: Monday-Friday, 2:30pm - 11:00pm. Shift differential.
  • Additional Coverage: Rotational weekends, rotational holidays, and occasional shift coverage as needed. Rotational participation in the disaster team.

GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB:
The registered Medical Laboratory Technician or Medical Technologist, under supervision Medical Director, Administrative Director, Manager, Lead and Senior is capable of performing all of the tests in a single area or majority of procedures in all areas, as defined by HCFA, of the clinical laboratory with appropriate sectional training. Performs highly complex procedures. Performs manual and automated laboratory assays requiring independent judgment. Reports results to nurses and physicians relating the results to normal range for age; and recognizing and reporting critical values.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains utmost level of confidentiality at all times.
  • Adheres to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for specific role during various internal and external CODE and disaster occurrences.
  • Responsible for insuring compliance of Infection control techniques within the Laboratory.
  • Responsible for insuring compliance of Safety techniques within the Laboratory.
  • Responsible for insuring proper security procedures when entering the building and demonstrating appropriate use of ID badge.
  • Responsible for insuring proper use of the Pneumatic Tube System.
  • Responsible for compliance of IOP/CQI issues.
  • Demonstrates business practices and personal actions that are ethical and adhere to corporate compliance and integrity guidelines.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of supplies, reagents and request replacements within the established time policies.
  • Assures that supplies are restocked for all three shifts.
  • Confers with physicians and/or nurses on laboratory findings, timing and availability of test results or procedures.
  • Notifies section chief and/or Administrative Director immediately if laboratory and hospital policies and procedures are violated.
  • Represents the laboratory section technically to assigned committees physicians, nursing staff, support staff and patients.
  • Performs duties and responsibilities of medical laboratory technician.
  • Revises and reviews procedure manuals according to NCCLS guidelines.
  • Communicates appropriately with coworkers, hospital personnel, physicians and physician offices.
  • Evaluates and validates new reagents, equipment and procedures according to laboratory policies and procedures and regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintains knowledge of new technology and procedures and makes recommendations when appropriate.
  • Responsible for specimen identification and integrity.
  • Responsible for operation of equipment including maintenance and quality control.
  • Complies with established safety policies and protective attire.
  • Maintain coverage of the laboratory to provide adequate patient care, which may require "last minute" schedule changes.
  • Must promote team leadership and be a team player;
  • Must be familiar with performance and interpretation of laboratory procedures associated with pediatric hospital with most patients below the age of 18 years;
  • Performs other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
Medical Laboratory Technician:
  • Associate of Science Degree (AS) from a two-year College or University:
  • Required one year formal university/hospital based accredited course work in Medical Laboratory Technology beyond an Associate's Degree (Clinical Internship).

Medical Technologist:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) from a four-year College or University required.
  • One year formal university/hospital based accredited course work in Medical Technology beyond a Bachelor's Degree (Clinical Internship).

CERTIFICATION:
Medical Laboratory Technician:
  • MLT (ASCP) within one year from date of hire.

Medical Technologist:
  • MT (ASCP) within one year from date of hire.
