Job Title: Palo Alto L3 Engineer

- Role Overview/Job Responsibilities
Our Client is seeking an experienced Senior Network Security Engineer with deep expertise in Palo Alto Networks firewalls, enterprise networking, and secure datacenter infrastructure. The selected consultant will lead the configuration, optimization, and administration of Palo Alto PA-5420 high-availability firewalls while supporting the implementation of secure customer connectivity, SD-WAN, and enterprise network segmentation. This role requires a strong understanding of Layer 3 networking, BGP routing, VRFs, IPsec VPNs, security zoning, and firewall policy management in large-scale enterprise environments.
The engineer will begin the engagement with an initial on-site onboarding period to understand the existing infrastructure, establish administrative access, review firewall configurations, and collaborate with internal engineering teams. Following the onboarding phase, the engagement will primarily be remote with scheduled on-site visits as needed.
  • Review, assess, and optimize Palo Alto PA-5420 HA firewall deployments.
  • Configure and maintain Virtual Systems (VSYS), security zones, firewall policies, and customer network segmentation.
  • Design, implement, and troubleshoot enterprise Layer 3 networking, including eBGP routing, VRFs, VLANs, and IP addressing.
  • Build and configure secure IPsec VPN tunnels between enterprise and customer environments.
  • Support secure APN connectivity and enterprise routing integration.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams and external technology partners to complete firewall implementations and network integrations.
  • Design and implement SD-WAN connectivity using Palo Alto firewalls across distributed sites.
  • Perform packet captures, traffic analysis, and advanced network troubleshooting to resolve connectivity and security issues.
  • Review and update network documentation, configuration standards, and as-built diagrams.
  • Develop a comprehensive Palo Alto Firewall Administration Runbook, including standard operating procedures for firewall provisioning, routing, security policies, and ongoing operational support.
  • Ensure firewall configurations align with security best practices and organizational standards.

Required Qualifications
  • 8+ years of hands-on experience with enterprise network security and firewall administration.
  • Strong experience administering Palo Alto Networks firewalls, including PA-5400 series or equivalent.
  • Expertise in Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking, including VLANs, VRFs, eBGP, static routing, and IP addressing.
  • Experience configuring and troubleshooting IPsec VPNs and secure customer connectivity.
  • Solid understanding of network segmentation, security zones, NAT, and access control policies.
  • Experience implementing High Availability (HA) firewall deployments.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills using packet captures, logs, and diagnostic tools.
  • Experience working in enterprise datacenter environments.
  • Ability to create detailed technical documentation and operational runbooks.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional engineering teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Palo Alto Networks certifications (PCNSA, PCNSE, or equivalent).
  • Experience with SD-WAN architecture and deployment.
  • Familiarity with Juniper routing, Nokia transport networks, Ericsson networking solutions, and enterprise wireless or carrier network environments.
  • Experience supporting mission-critical or utility-scale network infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices and secure network architecture.
