This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for an Associate Mechanical Engineer to join our Property & Buildings Building Systems Team in Tampa, FL. This is an excellent opportunity for an early-career engineer to grow their technical expertise while supporting the design and delivery of mechanical building systems across a variety of project types including commercial, healthcare, higher education, science & technology, federal, civic, mixed-use, and industrial facilities.
Working alongside experienced engineers and multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to the development of HVAC, plumbing, hydronic, and building systems designs while receiving mentorship and professional development opportunities to support your career growth.
Your Impact
  • Assist with the design and analysis of mechanical building systems, including:
    • HVAC systems
    • Air distribution systems
    • Hydronic systems
    • Plumbing systems
    • Temperature control systems
  • Support the preparation of engineering calculations, technical reports, specifications, and construction documents.
  • Utilize engineering software and tools to perform load calculations, energy analyses, and system layouts.
  • Develop and modify design drawings using Revit, AutoCAD, and other design platforms.
  • Participate in field investigations, site visits, and existing conditions assessments.
  • Assist with construction administration activities, including reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and supporting construction observations.
  • Coordinate with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Support project managers and senior engineers in meeting project schedules, budgets, and quality objectives.
  • Conduct research related to applicable building codes, standards, and emerging technologies.
  • Assist with preparing client presentations and project deliverables.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct consistent with WSP policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • 1-3 years of relevant experience in mechanical engineering or building systems design.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
  • Familiarity with HVAC, plumbing, and building systems design principles.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals, building systems, and industry standards.
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior internship, co-op, or consulting engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting healthcare, higher education, commercial, science & technology, federal, laboratory, or mission critical projects.
  • Familiarity with Trane Trace, HAP, IESVE, or similar engineering analysis software.
  • Knowledge of ASHRAE, NFPA, International Mechanical Code (IMC), and related industry standards.
  • Experience working within BIM workflows and Revit MEP environments.
  • Demonstrated interest in pursuing Professional Engineer (PE) licensure.
