Both roles require basic animation skills and are aimed at students or recent graduates eager to build their portfolios.

What types of projects do interns typically work on at an indie animation studio, and how much creative input can they expect to have?

Interns at indie animation studios often get hands-on experience with a variety of projects, such as short films, web series, or promotional animations. Due to the smaller team sizes, interns usually have the opportunity to contribute creatively—whether it's through storyboarding, character design, or even animating short sequences. Collaboration is common, and interns frequently work directly with experienced animators and directors, allowing for meaningful feedback and skill development. This environment fosters learning and provides a chance to build a strong portfolio with real-world projects.

Join us for the opportunity to create groundbreaking games with some of the best developer talent in the industry.
You can learn more about our studio and values at respawn.com/studio.
We are seeking a Character Artist to join our Apex Legends team. In this role, you will be responsible for creating high-quality character content that helps bring the diverse cast of Legends and the world of Apex to life.
You will partner closely with Art Direction, Character Leads, Concept Artists, Technical Artists, Animators, and external development partners to create visually compelling and technically sound character assets that meet the artistic vision and gameplay requirements of Apex Legends. You will help drive successful content creation both internally and externally by supporting asset reviews, documentation, and production collaboration throughout development.
Our ideal candidate combines strong artistic fundamentals with a solid understanding of real-time character production. You are collaborative, detail-oriented, and passionate about creating memorable characters while continuously developing your craft and technical expertise. You are comfortable collaborating with external development partners and helping guide content through review and integration pipelines while maintaining Apex quality standards.
What you'll do...
  • Create high-quality character assets, including characters, character gear, and wearable items, that meet Apex Legends visual and technical standards.
  • Translate concept art and visual direction into production-ready 3D character assets for use in-game.
  • Model, sculpt, texture, and author materials for character assets while maintaining quality, performance, and production requirements.
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of anatomy, proportion, silhouette, clothing construction, and surface detail in character creation.
  • Create efficient topology, UV layouts, and texture sets that support both visual fidelity and technical requirements.
  • Collaborate with Character Leads, Technical Artists, and Animators to ensure assets deform correctly and perform well in-game.
  • Work with Technical Art and Engineering to evaluate assets in engine, troubleshoot issues, and achieve desired visual results.
  • Contribute to establishing and maintaining quality standards, consistency, and visual cohesion across character content.
  • Accurately estimate tasks, communicate progress, and proactively identify production risks or challenges.
  • Participate in external development reviews, providing clear, actionable feedback to external partners and helping drive assets toward Apex quality standards.
  • Support the creation and maintenance of outsourcing documentation, asset briefs, reference packages, and production guidance that enable external partners to execute successfully.
  • Collaborate with Leads and Senior Artists to identify, communicate, and resolve asset quality, production, and workflow challenges with external partners.
  • Contribute to external partner evaluations through timely content reviews, quality assessments, and feedback on deliverables.
  • Participate in regular syncs, reviews, and production discussions with external partners and internal stakeholders to ensure alignment on goals, priorities, and expectations.
  • Stay at the forefront of industry trends, emerging tools, and new technologies, helping the team adopt and evolve best practices.

Ideally, you will have...
  • 3+ years of experience as a Character Artist in game development, film, or a related real-time content creation field.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality character art, including anatomy, clothing, materials, and real-time game assets.
  • Strong understanding of human anatomy, proportion, silhouette, and character design principles.
  • Experience creating game-ready character models, including high-poly sculpting, low-poly modeling, UV creation, and PBR texturing.
  • Solid understanding of topology and deformation requirements for animated characters.
  • Experience working with real-time rendering pipelines and modern game engines.
  • Understanding of shaders, materials, and how they contribute to final character presentation.
  • Experience collaborating with Technical Art, Animation, and Design teams to achieve high-quality in-game results.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to balance artistic quality with technical constraints.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with a proactive and growth-oriented mindset.
  • Experience reviewing, integrating, or supporting outsourced content pipelines and external development partners.
  • Ability to communicate artistic feedback clearly and constructively to both internal and external development teams.
