Internship Human Systems Integration information

What types of projects do interns typically work on in a human systems integration internship?

Interns in Human Systems Integration often support multidisciplinary teams on projects focused on optimizing the interaction between people, technology, and processes. Typical responsibilities may include conducting user research, assisting in human factors analysis, participating in design reviews, and supporting the development of ergonomic solutions. You may also help create documentation, analyze data, or test system prototypes. This role provides valuable exposure to both technical and user-experience aspects, fostering collaboration with engineers, designers, and project managers.

What is the difference between Internship Human Systems Integration vs Human Factors Engineering Intern?

AspectInternship Human Systems IntegrationHuman Factors Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in systems engineering, human factors, or related fieldsUsually pursuing or recent graduate in psychology, ergonomics, or human factors
Work EnvironmentSystems development, integration teams, defense, aerospace, or government projectsDesign labs, usability testing, product development, and research settings
Employer & Industry UsageDefense, aerospace, government agencies, and systems integratorsConsumer electronics, software companies, healthcare, and research institutions

Internship Human Systems Integration focuses on integrating human considerations into complex systems, often within defense and aerospace sectors. Human Factors Engineering Internships emphasize designing user-friendly products and interfaces. While both roles involve understanding human capabilities, the former leans toward systems integration, and the latter toward usability and design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship human systems integration, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Human Systems Integration, you generally need foundational knowledge in human factors engineering, systems design, and data analysis, often supported by a degree program in engineering, psychology, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as CAD software, usability testing platforms, and data visualization systems is advantageous. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring that systems are user-friendly, efficient, and meet both technical and human requirements.

What is an internship human systems integration?

Internship Human Systems Integration positions are temporary roles designed for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in the field of Human Systems Integration (HSI). These internships focus on applying principles from psychology, engineering, and design to optimize the interaction between humans and complex systems, such as software, machinery, or work environments. Interns may assist with research, data analysis, usability testing, and the development of user-centered solutions. The goal is to improve system performance, safety, and user satisfaction by considering human capabilities and limitations throughout the design process.

Systems Integration Engineer - Hand Subsystem

Figure

San Jose, CA

$150K - $250K/yr

Full-time

Re-posted 9 days ago

Job description

Figure is an AI robotics company developing autonomous general-purpose humanoid robots. The goal of the company is to ship humanoid robots with human level intelligence. Its robots are engineered to perform a variety of tasks in the home and commercial markets. Figure is based in San Jose, CA and require 5 days/week in-office collaboration. It's time to build.

We are seeking a Systems Integration Engineer - Hand Subsystem on the Actuation/Hand Integration team to integrate the dexterous hand subsystem into the full humanoid robot. This role will work closely with mechanical, electrical, controls and software teams to deliver robust, highperformance hand solutions and ensure that every robot hand is ready for deployment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Integrate multiDOF robotic hands with the humanoid control stack. Plan and execute behaviors to validate motion, sensing and control at the system level
  • Own calibration strategies and endofline bring-up. Create and implement designvalidation and productionscale test plans for hand subsystems, document results and ensure that each hand meets quality and reliability standards
  • Incorporate sensor and feedback systems. Integrate position, torque and tactile sensors into realtime control;
  • Develop real-time diagnostic algorithms to enable fall-back strategies.
  • Debug and analyze performance. Perform handson debugging of mechanical, electrical and software integration issues; use diagnostic tools to identify root causes and drive corrective actions
  • Tune controllers and characterize performance. Collaborate with controls engineers to synthesize and tune highbandwidth controllers for hand actuators; conduct system identification and data analysis to characterize actuation performance
  • Collaborate across disciplines. Work with design, firmware, software and AI teams to integrate algorithms, embedded systems and behaviors.
  • Design Validation Test Plans: Specify test plans for validation.
  • Bring up prototypes and first articles
  • Develop automation and tooling. Build scripts, dashboards and automated test rigs to streamline repetitive testing, data collection and diagnostics

Requirements:

  • 5+ years of handson experience working on robotic or electromechanical systems with a focus on actuation, manipulation or integration;
  • Proficiency in C++ and Python for embedded development and diagnostics
  • Proven experience integrating sensors, and control tuning of motion systems
  • Strong understanding of mechanics, kinematics, controls, dynamics and sensor technologies
  • Familiarity with Linuxbased development environments
  • Skilled with lab equipment for validation and software debugging.
  • Resilient and effective in fast-paced, challenging environments.
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Controls Engineering, Robotics or a related field

Bonus Qualifications:

  • Prior work on robotic hands actuation systems or multi DOF systems.
  • Working knowledge of communication buses and protocols like Ethernet, Ethercat, Serial, SPI and I2C.
  • Proficiency with Matlab/Simulink
  • Expertise in CAD to collaborate with design teams

The US base salary range for this full-time position is between $150,000 and $250,000 annually.

The pay offered for this position may vary based on several individual factors, including job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package may also include additional components/benefits depending on the specific role. This information will be shared if an employment offer is extended.Â
