What are Internship Farriers?

Internship Farriers are individuals, typically students or recent graduates, who work under the supervision of experienced farriers to learn the skills necessary for equine hoof care. During their internship, they assist with tasks such as trimming, shoeing, and maintaining horse hooves, as well as diagnosing and treating common hoof problems. This hands-on experience is essential for developing proficiency in farriery and is often required before becoming a certified or fully qualified farrier. Internships provide practical exposure, mentorship, and the opportunity to build a professional network within the equine industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Farrier, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Farrier, you need foundational knowledge of equine anatomy, hoof care, and basic blacksmithing, often gained through equine science studies or apprenticeships. Familiarity with farrier tools (e.g., rasps, nippers, anvils) and safety equipment is essential, and some programs may require certifications like the American Farrier's Association (AFA) Certified Farrier. Strong physical stamina, attention to detail, and effective communication with horse owners and veterinarians help you stand out. These skills ensure the safety and well-being of horses while building trust with clients and professionals in the equine industry.
