What You Will Do
The Gas Transfer Systems (GTS) Group (Q-7) is seeking an Undergraduate Student to fulfill a broad range of challenging assignments in support of the GTS mission. The successful candidate will be highly organized, self-motivated, proficient in multi-tasking, and capable of working across disciplines. In this position, the student will be involved in a LANL project where they will be mentored in a two-phased approach, 1) researching and planning for reactive materials in a glovebox; 2) understanding material requirements for a nuclear facility.
As the design authority for Gas Transfer Systems (Q-7), our team provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy innovative gas transfer technologies critical to the nation's nuclear deterrent. The Q-7 team consists of engineers, technologists, and technicians engaged in interdisciplinary projects spanning conceptual development through system deployment and mission execution.

The Engineering Undergraduate Student (UGS) Program offers paid summer and year-round internships for undergraduate students in a variety of disciplines. The program provides mentoring, hands-on technical experience, and professional development opportunities through a formalized work plan complementing the student's chosen area of study.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in any engineering discipline. Examples of Engineering degrees in greatest demand include Mechanical, Electrical, Nuclear, Materials, Aeronautic, Chemical, Civil and Environmental.
  • Must be enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent) in an accredited degree program (or international equivalent).
  • Entering freshmen must provide documentation indicating matriculation into a suitable undergraduate degree program.
  • Must currently have and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
Desired Qualifications:
Students selected for UGS internships are most competitive when they possess the following knowledge and skills:
  • Computer programming in support of engineering design, data acquisition, analysis or machine learning;
  • Fabrication and testing techniques currently used within your selected specific engineering field(s);
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience;
  • Laboratory or shop experience demonstrating attention to detail and commitment to safety;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate (verbal and written) well in a professional scientific context; and
  • Commitment to achieving results in a complex social and organizational setting.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance, and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
