HES offers a full suite of consulting services, including Building Energy Modeling, Renewable Energy Consulting, Master Planning, Energy Audit, Building Commissioning, Measurement and Verification, and Building Retro-Commissioning. We pride ourselves on the work we perform and the services we provide. HES is hiring an Energy Engineer specializing in Energy Audit to join our team.

The Energy Engineer (Energy Audit) will lead the technical execution of ASHRAE Level I, II, and III energy audits across commercial, institutional, and multi-family buildings. This role focuses on identifying Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs), quantifying savings opportunities, and producing high-quality client deliverables that drive energy efficiency and decarbonization outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Perform ASHRAE Level I/II/III Energy Audits: Analyze utility bills (electric, gas, steam, water) and architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings to baseline building energy consumption.
  • Conduct Onsite Audits: Lead and support field investigations of building envelope, HVAC equipment, lighting, domestic hot water, plug loads, and building automation systems using hand tools, light meters, data loggers, and infrared cameras.
  • Identify Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs): Develop a comprehensive list of viable ECMs tailored to the facility, occupancy, and client goals, including operational, capital, and decarbonization measures (e.g., electrification, heat pumps).
  • Perform Energy and Cost Analyses: Calculate energy and demand savings using engineering calculations, bin analysis, spreadsheet tools, and/or simplified energy models; develop installed cost estimates and financial metrics (simple payback, ROI, NPV, IRR).
  • Generate Technical Reports: Author client-ready audit reports including executive summaries, ECM write-ups, savings tables, recommendations, and supporting appendices.
  • Support Utility Incentive and Decarbonization Programs: Prepare documentation supporting utility incentive applications (e.g., NYSERDA, ConEd, NJ Clean Energy) and local carbon legislation compliance (e.g., NYC Local Law 97, BERDO).
  • Client and Project Coordination: Coordinate site visit logistics, communicate progress to project managers and clients, and respond to client questions during and after the audit.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's in Engineering (Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural, or Facilities)
  • 1-3 years of experience performing energy audits or energy engineering work, including at least one internship, co-op, or full-time role
  • Working knowledge of HVAC systems, lighting systems, building envelope, controls, and renewable systems
  • Familiarity with ASHRAE Procedures for Commercial Building Energy Audits
  • Experience using audit tools (data loggers, light meters, IR cameras, combustion analyzers) preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Excel)
  • Experience with large commercial and multi-family buildings preferred but not necessary
  • EIT, CEM, or CEA credential preferred (or willingness to obtain within first year)
  • Travel throughout the United States as required by project workload

Personal Qualifications

  • Strong analytical, writing, and presentation skills
  • Passionate about mitigating climate change
  • Collaborative and a strong team player
  • Self-motivated with the ability to multitask and pay attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Enthusiasm to learn and grow as a professional
