Overview
The Department of Clinical Sciences at the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants to fill a full-time, 12-month/year appointment. Depending on experience, qualifications, and interest, the successful candidate will be appointed to either a tenure-track (Assistant/Associate/Professor) or a non-tenure-track (Clinical Assistant/Associate/Professor or Professor of Practice) position in dermatology.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to participate in teaching, clinical service, and research/scholarly activity. Teaching responsibilities include the clinical, didactic, and laboratory instructional activities of professional veterinary medicine and postgraduate training programs related to dermatology. Full-time equivalent (FTE) assignments for clinical service and research responsibilities are negotiable and will depend on the successful candidate's interests and the type of appointment, i.e., clinical vs. tenure track vs. professor of practice. Clinical service includes patient care, procedural and surgical interventions, teaching veterinary medical students and interns, resident training, and consultation with private practitioners.
Qualifications
Applicants for the position must hold a DVM or equivalent degree; and be either board-eligible or have obtained Diplomate status in the American College of Veterinary Dermatologists (ACVD) or have obtained Diplomate status in the European College of Veterinary Dermatology (ECVD), Fellows of the Dermatology Chapter of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (DCANZCVS), or the Asian College of Veterinary Dermatology (AiCVD). These veterinary dermatology organizations are currently recognized as approved for mentoring ACVD residents. These qualifications must be met at the time employment begins. The candidate selected for this position must be able to meet eligibility requirements to work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment. Eligibility for faculty veterinary licensure in the State of Alabama is also required.
For a tenure-track position, research experience and an advanced degree (MS or PhD) are desired but not required. Tenure-track faculty are expected to establish a specific area of research focus, seek extramural funding, and mentor residents pursuing graduate degrees.

Description of dermatology service: The dermatology service at Auburn University is committed to excellence in clinical service, teaching of professional veterinary students, and resident training. The dermatology service is composed of one full-time licensed veterinary technician specialist of dermatology and one full-time clinical professor of dermatology. The dermatology service is complemented by and provides consultations for specialists in community practice, small animal surgery, small animal medicine, medical and radiation oncology, emergency/critical care, anesthesia, cardiology, neurology, radiology, small animal and large animal ophthalmology, equine medicine and surgery, sports medicine, food animal medicine and surgery, equine, food animal and small animal theriogenology, dairy medicine, and pathology. Additionally, physical therapy and acupuncture services are available. These services are supported by full service in-house laboratories in clinical pathology, pathobiology/histopathology, clinical endocrinology, microbiology, serology, virology, molecular diagnostics, and clinical pharmacology. There is a full-service pharmacy with on-site staff pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
The successful candidate will join a team of one ACVD board-certified faculty, 1-2 ACVD residents or specialty interns, and one dedicated service specialty technician. The working environment is supportive and collegial, with structured mentorship for new faculty. Professional development is both encouraged and expected, with support for continuing education and guidance from experienced colleagues. There are three, double-headed microscopes in the dermatology treatment area, and two double-headed microscopes in the dermatologists' offices. One dermatology service microscope is dedicated for histopathology and has the capacity of digital imaging of microscopic specimens (Nikon Eclipse Ci-L double headed microscope with digital sight DS-Fi2 camera capture). This microscope also displays digital images on a large overhead television screen. A digital camera is available for acquisition of clinical images (digital Canon EOS Rebel Series with video recording capabilities and macro-focus lens). Two Storz video otoscopes (Xenon Nova model and WD300 model) with monitor and recording capabilities. Two Aesculight CO2 LASERs (3020 and 4020 models) are available for performing routine surgical procedures that are to be housed in the dermatology department, but shared by the small and large animal hospitals. Cryosurgery utilizing either a handheld liquid nitrogen canister (Cry-Ac-3 cryogun by Brymill), a stationary probe (Frigitonics, Ophthalmology service), or a hand-held nitrous oxide unit (CryoProbe®) is available for treatment of dermatology lesions. Routine diagnostic and therapeutic procedures appropriate to a referral specialty service other than radiation therapy are performed within the dermatology section. Duplicate histopathological microscope slides are provided on all skin biopsy specimens submitted for resident/faculty review and are catalogued for future reference

Teaching, Research, and Scholarship Opportunities: Shared research space and technical support, including a clinical trials coordinator, are provided within the Department. There are numerous opportunities for research collaboration within the Auburn University veterinary medicine campus, Auburn University's main campus, and the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine Auburn campus as well as at medical colleges at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and Emory University. The Department participates in college-wide veterinary and graduate programs. Faculty development is a priority with a formal mentoring program for new faculty through the Department of Clinical Sciences. The Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (wp.auburn.edu/biggio) located on Auburn's main campus is a fantastic resource for all things teaching related including support for instructional technologies. The CVM also has monthly teaching enhancement workshops and a summer teaching institute that has brought nationally recognized speakers to present on a variety of teaching related topics. The AU-CVM is supported by a medical and scientific research library, professionally staffed and with computer, video and other research support facilities. Faculty are provided with photocopying privileges, inter-library loan services, and photographic services. Many electronic books are available through the AU-CVM library including several major dermatology textbooks.
