Internship Data Visualization information

What types of projects and tools can I expect to work with during a data visualization internship?

As a Data Visualization intern, you will typically collaborate with data analysts and business stakeholders to create visual representations of complex datasets. You can expect to work on projects such as interactive dashboards, infographics, and reports using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or open-source libraries such as D3.js and Plotly. Interns often assist in cleaning and preparing data, designing visual layouts, and presenting findings to team members. This role offers valuable exposure to both technical and creative aspects of data storytelling, and provides a strong foundation for future roles in data analytics or visualization.

What is an internship data visualization?

Internship data visualization roles are entry-level positions where interns learn to create visual representations of data to help organizations make data-driven decisions. These roles typically involve working with tools like Tableau, Power BI, or Python libraries to turn raw data into charts, graphs, and dashboards. Interns gain hands-on experience by assisting with data cleaning, analysis, and reporting tasks, while learning best practices in presenting complex information clearly and effectively. These internships are a great way for students and recent graduates to develop technical and analytical skills in a real-world setting.

What is the difference between Internship Data Visualization vs Data Analyst Intern?

AspectInternship Data VisualizationData Analyst Intern

Internship Data Visualization focuses on creating visual representations of data to communicate insights, often using tools like Tableau or Power BI. Data Analyst Interns perform broader data analysis, including statistical evaluation and data cleaning. Both roles are entry-level, require basic technical skills, and are used across various industries. The main difference lies in the emphasis: visualization versus comprehensive data analysis.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship data visualization, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Data Visualization, you need a solid understanding of data analysis, basic statistics, and proficiency with visualization concepts, often supported by coursework in computer science, statistics, or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Tableau, Power BI, Excel, or programming languages like Python (with libraries such as Matplotlib or Seaborn) is typically expected. Attention to detail, creativity, and effective communication skills help interns present data insights clearly to diverse audiences. These skills ensure that data-driven stories are accurately and compellingly conveyed to support decision-making.

Job description

Foxconn Industrial Internet is seeking a motivated and technically strong Engineering Data Visualization & Analytics Intern to join our Engineering and Operations team in Houston, TX for the Fall 2026 Internship Program. This is a part-time, 20-hour-per-week role running 13 weeks (August 31 – November 27, 2026).

The intern will work closely with engineering, operations, and IT teams to develop and enhance Tableau dashboards that deliver real-time visibility into key manufacturing and operational metrics. The focus of this role is on transforming raw data into actionable insights — improving reporting consistency, standardizing KPI methodologies, and enabling data-driven decision-making across the organization.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, develop, and maintain Tableau dashboards that support engineering, manufacturing, and operations teams with real-time visibility into key metrics.

  • Analyze business and operational requirements to translate stakeholder needs into effective data visualizations and reporting solutions.

  • Support the standardization of key performance metrics and reporting methodologies across engineering and operations functions.

  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and IT stakeholders to identify reporting gaps, dashboard enhancement opportunities, and new data requirements.

  • Validate data accuracy and ensure consistency across all reports and dashboards before deployment.

  • Assist with data extraction, transformation, and preparation from various sources to support reporting and visualization needs.

  • Create and maintain documentation covering dashboard development standards, data sources, and reporting processes to ensure continuity and knowledge transfer.

  • Present dashboard updates, findings, and project recommendations to engineering and operations stakeholders.

REQUIRED SKILLS & TECHNICAL PROFICIENCIES

  • Experience with Tableau, Power BI, or similar data visualization tools strongly preferred. Tableau will be the primary platform used in this role.

  • Familiarity with SQL and data querying techniques for extracting and preparing data from relational databases.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis, validation, and reporting support.

  • Understanding of dashboard design principles and data visualization best practices.

  • Experience working with large datasets and operational or performance metrics.

  • Knowledge of Power BI, Python, or other analytics and automation tools is a plus.

  • Familiarity with manufacturing, engineering, or operational reporting environments is a plus.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data and present it clearly.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder collaboration and presentation delivery.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • Detail-oriented and methodical, with a strong commitment to data accuracy and documentation quality.

  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to manage assigned workstreams independently while collaborating closely with the engineering and operations teams.

  • Comfortable working in a dynamic manufacturing environment where priorities can shift and adaptability is key.

  • Curious about process improvement, digitalization, and how data can drive better manufacturing outcomes.

  • Able to translate technical findings into clear, actionable summaries for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE & COMPENSATION

  • Part-time: 20 hours per week.

  • Flexible scheduling available to accommodate academic commitments.

  • Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications.
