Job Description

Purpose:

Zachry Common Labs invites applications for a full-time Laboratory Technician under general supervision, evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering or scientific techniques to support the teaching and research operation of Zachry Common Labs. General areas of focus include: mechanical testing, material science, fluid and mechanical processes (e.g. pumps, blowers, heat exchangers), control systems, electronics, and electrical systems. Technician will work as part of a team and their specific area of focus will complement the group expertise.

The technician must be able to communicate effectively with individuals of varying technical backgrounds. They will interact with students, faculty, teaching assistants and visitors to provide guidance, operational support and troubleshooting assistance in a fast-paced instructional laboratory environment.

What we need:

We are actively recruiting for a level I or II Technician.

Minimum qualifications for a Technician I:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Two years of related experience.

Minimum qualifications for a Technician II:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Three years of related experience.

The well-qualified candidates would possess the following:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

  • Experience working in a high-volume customer service or user-support environment.

  • Experience training, mentoring, or supervising student employees, interns, or laboratory users.

  • Experience in scientific research, operational, managerial, or experimental work.

  • Experience evaluating and implementing lab safety requirements.

  • Experience working with diverse groups of customers.

  • Experience in field and bench electronics repair.

  • Experience in power systems, including three phase power.

  • Experience in control systems, electronic, pneumatic and hydraulic.

  • Experience with data acquisition systems.

  • Experience using engineering software, cad software, etc.

  • Experience with mechanical system (pumps, blowers, compressors, heat exchangers).

  • Experience with materials testing and materials characterization.

The Zachry Common Labs span three floors and provide engineering students with access to state-of-the-art equipment for a hands-on experience.
