How much do internship chemical engineering h1b jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for internship chemical engineering h1b in the United States is $19.31, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.11 and $20.91 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is an internship in chemical engineering for H1B candidates?

An Internship in Chemical Engineering for H1B candidates refers to a temporary training position in the chemical engineering field, typically offered to students or recent graduates who are from abroad and seeking practical experience in the United States. H1B is a non-immigrant visa that allows U.S. employers to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations, including chemical engineering. However, internships are commonly pursued under student visas such as F-1 (with CPT or OPT authorization); H1B is generally used for full-time employment after graduation. If you are seeking an internship and eventually wish to transition to an H1B, it is important to understand the visa requirements and timelines.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during a chemical engineering internship on an H1B visa?

As a Chemical Engineering intern on an H1B visa, you can expect to work on a variety of projects, such as assisting with process optimization, supporting lab-scale experiments, and analyzing production data. You may also collaborate closely with senior engineers and cross-functional teams, gaining hands-on experience with real-world manufacturing or research challenges. These internships often provide exposure to industrial safety protocols and project management practices, which are valuable for future career advancement. The fast-paced environment encourages learning and offers opportunities to contribute meaningfully to ongoing projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chemical engineering intern on an H1B visa, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chemical Engineering Intern on an H1B, you need a solid grounding in chemical engineering principles, process design, and safety protocols, typically supported by enrollment in or completion of a relevant degree program. Familiarity with simulation software such as Aspen Plus or MATLAB, laboratory equipment, and adherence to regulatory standards is often required. Strong analytical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication skills set candidates apart in collaborative, problem-solving environments. These capabilities ensure interns can contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to industry requirements, and support the goals of their engineering teams.

What is the difference between Internship Chemical Engineering H1B vs Chemical Engineer?

AspectInternship Chemical Engineering H1BChemical Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically students or recent graduates, no professional license neededBachelor's degree in chemical engineering, professional license optional
Work EnvironmentTemporary, training-focused, often in labs or manufacturing plantsFull-time, ongoing roles in design, process development, or operations
Employer & Industry UsageInternships offered by companies to train future engineers, often in manufacturing or energy sectorsEstablished professionals working in chemical, pharmaceutical, or energy industries

In summary, an Internship Chemical Engineering H1B is a temporary training position for students or recent graduates, while a Chemical Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring a degree and possibly licensure. The internship provides practical experience, whereas the chemical engineer role involves ongoing responsibilities in process design, development, and operations.

Job description

About the companyย

General Matter enriches uranium.

We are designing, building, and operating the world's lowest-cost enrichment services, here in the US. ย

In the process, we are restoring America's ability to produce nuclear fuel to power AI, advanced manufacturing and critical industries our country relies on to remain competitive.ย

Fuel drives the cost of advanced reactor electricity production, and enrichment drives the cost of the fuel that advanced reactors consume. ย Reliable, low-cost enrichment is the catalyst for the nuclear Renaissance now under way.

Our mission is to make nuclear not only the cleanest and safest source of baseload power, but also the most affordable. ย We believe abundant nuclear energy will lead to a post-scarcity society.ย

We were incubated inside Founders Fund, like Anduril and Palantir before us, and are backed by over a dozen of the world's top venture capital firms. ย

Our lean, world-class team of engineers and operators is applying a first-principles approach to solving the problem of nuclear fuel production.ย

We are a mission-driven company with a culture of urgency, accountability, and transparency.ย

Help us build a high-energy society by making the cleanest, safest form of baseload energy the most affordable.ย

About This Role

As a General Matter Chemical Engineering Intern, you will help design, instrument, and build out advanced laboratory capabilities that support the development of a new generation of enrichment technology. You will work alongside experienced engineers and scientists while contributing to hands-on technical work across laboratory systems, analytical methods, specialized equipment, and experimental operations. This is an opportunity to build practical skills across chemistry, engineering, and instrumentation while helping bring new laboratory capabilities from concept through operation.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with mass spectrometry analysis, including isotopic analysis and trace element detection using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS), and Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (SIMS).
  • Support chemical process monitoring by applying analytical chemistry techniques to help ensure the quality and safety of nuclear fuel cycle materials.
  • Help develop and validate sample preparation, digestion, and separation techniques for nuclear material analysis.
  • Assist in interpreting mass spectrometry results and collaborating with process engineers and operations support to help optimize facility operations.
  • Maintain adherence to radiation protection, hazardous material handling, and chemical safety protocols.
  • Support senior scientists and engineers on projects aimed at improving fuel cycle efficiency and waste minimization.

Basic Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with mass spectrometry techniques (e.g., ICP-MS, TIMS, SIMS) and exposure to analytical instrumentation.
  • Basic proficiency in wet chemistry techniques, including sample digestion, titration, and precipitation methods.
  • Collaborative team member who thrives in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments and is eager to learn.
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals.

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work extended hours and weekends as necessary.
