Job description

GENERAL SUMMARY:
HFCI (Henry Ford Cancer Institute) RADIATION
ONCOLOGY SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Purpose:
To introduce undergraduate science/engineering students from backgrounds that are under-represented in medicine to the field of cancer. For
the purposes of this program, races and ethnicities that have been identified asunder-represented minorities (URM) include but are not limited to American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino and Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander. The program will provide students with exposure to the field of cancer medicine. The students will get to learn the basics of cancer, how patients are treated using technologies like radiation to destroy tumors, how the clinical team interacts with patients, and how the supporting team including radiation physicists work on quality of treatments to ensure patient safety. The overall goal is to provide experience in the field of cancer so that students can learn about cutting edge technologies used in medicine to help patients.
Eligibility Requirements:
The following requirements must be met for a student to be considered for the
program:
• Applicant must be enrolled in a U.S. college and be in good standing at the time the application is submitted.
• Applicant must be in science or engineering or a related field and must have interest in pursuing a medically-oriented discipline.
• Applicants should be Freshman, Sophomores or Juniors
• Black/African American
• Hispanic
• Native American
• Women of Color
Goals of Program:
To allow the students to gain familiarity with the field of cancer, including radiation oncology. They will learn about the daily schedule,
demands of the field and work/life balance as a professional in the field.
Stipend:
$2500
Participants are hired as temporary summer employees and receive a stipend for uninterrupted participation over the 6 weeks of the program. Stipends are paid in bi-weekly installments according to the HFHS payroll schedule, minus applicable
federal, state, and city payroll taxes.
Housing:
Location is Detroit, MI
  • HFCI does not provide housing to Summer Pipeline Program participants.
  • All housing and transportation expenses are the participant's responsibility.
