What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a Backcountry internship?

As a Backcountry intern, you'll typically be involved in a variety of hands-on projects that support the team’s goals, such as assisting with outdoor gear inventory management, supporting e-commerce operations, helping with marketing campaigns, or engaging in customer experience initiatives. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced professionals, gaining exposure to both the business and outdoor industry sides of the company. This environment offers valuable learning opportunities and the chance to develop practical skills while contributing to real-world outcomes. Expect a dynamic work environment where adaptability and enthusiasm for the outdoors are highly valued.

What is an Internship Backcountry position?

An Internship Backcountry position is a temporary role, often for students or recent graduates, that provides hands-on experience working in wilderness or remote outdoor environments. Interns may assist with trail maintenance, conservation projects, guiding, or outdoor education under the supervision of experienced staff. This type of internship helps individuals gain valuable skills in outdoor leadership, environmental stewardship, and teamwork, while also allowing them to explore potential careers in natural resource management or outdoor recreation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Backcountry Internship, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Backcountry Intern, you generally need a foundational knowledge of outdoor safety, wilderness navigation, and basic first aid, often supported by coursework or certifications like Wilderness First Aid or Leave No Trace. Familiarity with GPS devices, mapping software, and relevant communication tools such as satellite phones is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills for dealing with unpredictable environments and group dynamics. These skills ensure safety, effective support of fieldwork, and positive experiences in challenging backcountry settings.
