Internship Automotive Programming information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Automotive Programming, and why are they important?

To excel in an Internship Automotive Programming role, candidates should possess a solid understanding of programming languages such as C/C++, embedded systems, and a background in computer science or electrical engineering. Familiarity with automotive software tools like MATLAB/Simulink, CAN bus analyzers, and version control systems (e.g., Git) is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication skills help interns stand out. These competencies are crucial for contributing to complex automotive projects and adapting to the fast-evolving technology landscape in the industry.

What are Internship Automotive Programming positions?

Internship Automotive Programming positions are entry-level roles where students or recent graduates gain practical experience by working on software development projects within the automotive industry. Interns typically assist with tasks such as coding, debugging, testing, and integrating software for vehicle systems like infotainment, navigation, or autonomous driving features. These internships provide valuable hands-on training and exposure to industry-standard tools and practices, helping interns build skills relevant to automotive software engineering.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an Automotive Programming internship?

As an Automotive Programming intern, you will likely work on a variety of hands-on projects such as developing embedded software for vehicle control systems, assisting with diagnostics and testing, and supporting the integration of new features like infotainment or driver assistance technologies. You'll often collaborate with experienced engineers, participate in code reviews, and troubleshoot issues in both simulated and real vehicle environments. This role provides an excellent opportunity to gain practical experience with automotive protocols and tools while learning how cross-functional teams in the automotive industry operate.

Job description

Torque Security Calibration Engineer needed as soon as possible with a big time company!

Location: Chelsea, MI
Job Type: Long-Term Contract (1–2 Years)
Schedule: Primarily First Shift (Overtime, Evenings & Weekends as Needed)
Pay: $30.80/hour

We are seeking a Torque Security Calibration Engineer to join an automotive engineering team supporting vehicle calibration, validation, and functional safety testing. This is an outstanding opportunity for a recent engineering graduate or early-career engineer with a genuine passion for automobiles and hands-on vehicle work.

In this role, you'll work alongside experienced calibration engineers performing real-world vehicle testing, inducing system failures, validating safety responses, and helping develop world-class torque security calibrations for both traditional gasoline engines and electrified powertrain systems.

If you're the type of engineer who enjoys working on vehicles, solving technical problems, and wants to build a career in automotive engineering, we'd love to hear from you.

Responsibilities

  • Support vehicle calibration and functional safety validation testing.
  • Perform hands-on testing of development vehicles.
  • Execute validation test plans to verify vehicle system performance.
  • Induce sensor and system failures to confirm safe vehicle operation.
  • Assist with calibration development for powertrain and vehicle control systems.
  • Analyze large sets of engine and vehicle calibration data.
  • Generate reports documenting test results and program status.
  • Troubleshoot calibration and software-related issues.
  • Work with breakout harnesses, diagnostic equipment, and test instrumentation.
  • Coordinate vehicle updates and repairs with shop personnel.
  • Collaborate with powertrain, controls, vehicle, and engineering teams.
  • Participate in technical meetings, issue resolution, and cross-functional discussions.
  • Support launch readiness and validation activities.
  • Operate development vehicles at proving grounds and other test locations.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or related STEM field
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Aerospace Engineering
    • Automotive Engineering
    • Or similar engineering discipline
  • 0–3 years of engineering experience.
  • Strong recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Demonstrated hands-on automotive experience through one or more of the following:
    • Personal vehicle projects
    • Automotive hobbies
    • SAE/FSAE participation
    • Automotive clubs or competitions
    • Automotive internships or co-ops
  • Strong passion for vehicles and automotive engineering.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced engineering environment.
  • Willingness to perform hands-on vehicle testing and troubleshooting.
  • Flexibility to work overtime, evenings, and occasional weekends during critical testing periods.
  • Ability to travel approximately 4–6 weeks throughout the year.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with MATLAB and/or Simulink.
  • Calibration or controls engineering experience.
  • Functional safety knowledge.
  • Powertrain or vehicle controls experience.
  • Familiarity with engine management systems or electric propulsion.
  • Experience collecting and analyzing vehicle or engine test data.
  • Understanding of OBD systems and automotive diagnostics.

Travel

This role includes travel throughout the year to support validation and verification activities. Potential testing locations include:

  • Colorado
  • Arizona
  • Houghton, Michigan (Cold Weather Testing)

Travel typically totals 4–6 weeks annually, with company vehicles provided during testing events.

Work Environment

  • Approximately 80–90% of the work is performed at an automotive proving grounds in Chelsea, MI.
  • Primarily first-shift schedule.
  • Occasional work at additional engineering and testing facilities as needed.
  • Hands-on work performed both in engineering offices and inside development vehicles.

What We're Looking For

We're looking for engineers who are passionate about cars—not someone simply looking for any engineering position. The ideal candidate enjoys working on vehicles, solving technical problems, learning from experienced engineers, and wants to build a long-term career in automotive calibration and functional safety.

Why Apply?

  • Excellent opportunity for recent engineering graduates.
  • Gain exposure to complete vehicle systems instead of a single component.
  • Learn from experienced calibration engineers.
  • Work in a collaborative, supportive engineering environment.
  • Diverse technical challenges with continual learning opportunities.
  • Long-term contract with annual renewals anticipated based on performance and business needs.
  • Potential for future direct employment opportunities based on performance.
