What is an internship Altium PCB?

An Internship Altium PCB is a training position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in designing printed circuit boards (PCBs) using Altium Designer, a popular electronic design automation (EDA) software. Interns in this role typically assist with schematic capture, PCB layout, and documentation for electronic products. This internship helps individuals build practical skills in electronic design, understand industry standards, and prepare for careers in hardware engineering or PCB design.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an internship Altium PCB?

As an intern focusing on Altium PCB design, you will typically assist with schematic capture, PCB layout, and design validation using Altium Designer software. You may work on real-time projects such as developing prototype boards, updating existing layouts, or conducting design rule checks. Collaboration with hardware engineers and exposure to the full product development lifecycle are common, providing valuable hands-on experience. This role is an excellent opportunity to build practical skills while contributing to meaningful team projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship Altium PCB?

To thrive as an Altium PCB Design Intern, you need a solid understanding of electronic circuit theory, PCB layout principles, and basic knowledge of electrical engineering, often supported by current enrollment in an engineering program. Familiarity with Altium Designer software, schematic capture tools, and version control systems is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help interns excel in collaborating with engineering teams and learning quickly. These skills ensure accurate PCB designs, smooth workflow integration, and effective learning in a fast-paced engineering environment.

What is the difference between Internship Altium Pcb vs PCB Designer?

AspectInternship Altium PcbPCB Designer
CredentialsBasic knowledge of Altium Designer, relevant courseworkProficiency in PCB design software, certifications preferred
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, supervised tasks, entry-levelFull-time or freelance, professional design environment
Industry UsageTraining and learning phase, entry-level projectsDesigning complex PCB layouts for products and prototypes

Internship Altium Pcb roles focus on learning and assisting with PCB design using Altium Designer, often in a supervised environment. PCB Designer positions require advanced skills, experience, and the ability to independently create detailed PCB layouts for various electronic products. While internships are entry-level and educational, PCB Designer roles are professional and specialized.

Job description

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars.

PCB DESIGNER (STARLINK)

SpaceX is leveraging its experience in building rockets and spacecraft to deploy Starlink, the worldโ€™s most advanced broadband internet system. Starlink is the worldโ€™s largest satellite constellation and is providing fast, reliable internet to 7M+ users worldwide. We design, build, test, and operate all parts of the system โ€“ thousands of satellites, consumer receivers that allow users to connect within minutes of unboxing, and the software that brings it all together. Weโ€™ve only begun to scratch the surface of Starlinkโ€™s potential global impact. As we continue to upgrade and expand the constellation, weโ€™re looking for best-in-class engineers to join the team.

As a PCB Designer at SpaceX, youโ€™ll be responsible for creating the layout for all our in-house board designs. Youโ€™re not just connecting the dots. Here youโ€™ll partner closely with Hardware Development Engineers as they develop their schematics, providing your expertise and recommendations at each design review, and iterating your designs to come up with the best possible solutions. Youโ€™ll contribute to a variety of design mixes from radio phased arrays to solar power converters and more.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Determine layer stackup, perform component package selection, component placement, routing feasibility studies, and signal routing of digital, analog, RF, and power conversion of printed circuit boards (PCB)
  • Library creation and maintenance
  • Create and release documentation for fabrication of PCBs
  • Collaborate with internal teams and PCB vendors to continually improve design rules, constraints and design for test and manufacture guidelines
  • Utilize PCB design tools, maintain and evaluate new tools, and train team members to use tools
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in electrical engineering and 1+ years of professional experience with PCB layout OR 3+ years of professional experience with PCB layout in lieu of a degree (internships and club/project work applies)
PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 2+ years of experience with PCB layout and routing in one or all of the following areas: modern passive and active electronics components, surface-mount, RF components, ball-grid array and similar fine pitch, or high pin density components
  • 1+ years of experience with ECAD libraries and library configuration management
  • Demonstrated understanding of design for manufacturability, assembly, and test
  • Experience with Mentor Xpedition and/or Altium Designer (Mentor Xpedition preferred)
  • Experience with layout of mixed analog and digital designs, high speed buses, FPGA, DRAM and CPU designs, power supplies, DC-DC converters, transmission lines, impedance-controlled traces and power traces
  • Experience with MIL-STD, commercial and IPC standards and design
  • Experience monitoring industry-wide parts
  • Ability to visualize component placement and interconnectivity
  • Experience with scripting and automation
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work effectively with others
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to work extended hours or weekends as needed for mission-critical deadlines
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range:
PCB Designer/Level I: $100,000.00 - $120,000.00 per year
PCB Designer/Level II: $115,000.00 - $135,000.00 per year

Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis and may vary based on the following considerations: job-related knowledge and skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one part of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, in the form of company stock, stock options, or long-term cash awards, as well as potential discretionary bonuses and the ability to purchase additional stock at a discount through an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. You will also receive access to comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, access to a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks. You may also accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and will be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays per year. Employees in Washington State accrue paid sick time in compliance with state and federal law. Company shuttles are offered to employees for roundtrip travel from select Seattle locations to the SpaceX Redmond office Monday to Friday.
