Internship Advanced Manufacturing information

What is an internship in advanced manufacturing?

An internship in advanced manufacturing is a temporary, hands-on training opportunity for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in modern manufacturing technologies and processes. These internships typically involve working with cutting-edge machinery, automation, robotics, and digital manufacturing techniques. Interns may assist in tasks such as process optimization, quality control, product development, or data analysis. The goal is to provide exposure to real-world manufacturing environments and help interns build technical and professional skills relevant to the industry.

What types of projects do interns typically work on in an advanced manufacturing internship?

As an Advanced Manufacturing intern, you can expect to be involved in hands-on projects that contribute directly to production efficiency, quality improvement, or implementation of new technologies. Tasks may include assisting with process optimization, supporting automation initiatives, collecting and analyzing production data, and collaborating with engineers on prototype development. Interns often work within cross-functional teams, gaining exposure to manufacturing operations, quality assurance, and supply chain processes. This practical experience helps build both technical and problem-solving skills essential for a career in advanced manufacturing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an advanced manufacturing intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Advanced Manufacturing Intern, you typically need a background in engineering or manufacturing technology, with foundational knowledge in CAD, process improvement, and quality control. Familiarity with tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and manufacturing execution systems (MES) is often required, along with possible exposure to Lean or Six Sigma methodologies. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective teamwork help interns stand out in collaborative, problem-solving environments. These skills are crucial for supporting production efficiency, innovation, and quality standards in modern manufacturing settings.

What is the difference between Internship Advanced Manufacturing vs Manufacturing Technician?

AspectInternship Advanced ManufacturingManufacturing Technician
CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate of engineering, manufacturing, or related programsHigh school diploma or technical certification, some experience preferred
Work EnvironmentEducational setting, training labs, or entry-level production areasActive production floors, maintenance, and equipment operation
Employer & Industry UsageInternship programs in manufacturing companies, often for training purposesManufacturing plants, factories, and industrial facilities
Search & Comparison IntentLearning about entry-level opportunities and training programsUnderstanding roles involving hands-on manufacturing work

In summary, Internship Advanced Manufacturing focuses on training and educational experiences for students or recent graduates, while Manufacturing Technicians are involved in hands-on production and maintenance tasks within manufacturing facilities. The internship prepares individuals for a career in manufacturing, whereas technicians are active contributors in daily operations.

Job description

Navitas Systems LLC, a leader in comprehensive energy storage solutions, was formed in 2011 with the merger of MicroSun Innovative Energy Storage Solutions and MicroSun Electronics, and the acquisition of lithium battery company A123 Systems’ Government Solutions Group. In 2019, East Penn Manufacturing, one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers, acquired majority interest in Navitas Systems. In SEVEN remarkable decades, East Penn has grown from a one-room shop with a product line of five automotive batteries to one of the world’s leading battery manufacturers with over 10,500 full-time employees, 515 product designs, operations around the world, and hundreds of awards for industry excellence.

At our Navitas facilities we engage in the research, design, development, and manufacture of advanced lithium cells and energy storage products and systems for both commercial customers and U.S. Government/military customers. We invest in our people, they are and always will be the heart of this company. Are you ready to join a family-owned enterprise committed to honoring the contributions of everyone? Then Navitas is the right place for you.

Navitas is ready to invest in you! We are currently seeking a Product Engineering Intern to join our team for a Fall 2026 internship. We are looking for a motivated and detail-oriented Product Engineering Intern to support the development and manufacturing of advanced lithium-ion battery systems. This role provides hands-on experience in product design, validation, manufacturing support, and cross-functional collaboration within a fast-paced battery manufacturing environment. The intern will work closely with engineering, quality, and manufacturing teams to help improve product performance, reliability, and scalability.***Candidate must be lawful permanent resident or US Citizen and be able to work on site in Ann Arbor, MI
