Summary
The Automation Intern will work alongside the Automation Team in a hands-on manufacturing and automation integration environment. This role is designed for an undergraduate student who wants real-world experience in robotics, PLCs, CNC machinery, and industrial automation. The internship is primarily hands-on, with a strong focus on learning, skill development, and real-world application.
The intern will actively contribute to automation projects, including robotic welding process improvements, cycle time optimization, and quality enhancement across multiple robotic systems. This position is intended as a pipeline opportunity for future full-time employment.
Internship Duration: Fall Semester, beginning in August 2026
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
• Assist with programming, modifying, and optimizing robotic automation systems, primarily ABB robots
• Use RobotStudio on a company-issued laptop to support robotic programming and simulation
• Support PLC/PC based automation systems under the guidance of the Automation Team
• Improve robotic welding processes, including cycle time reduction and weld quality improvements
• Assist with troubleshooting automation and robotic issues on the manufacturing floor
• Support CNC machine automation and integration efforts as needed
• Collect, analyze, and document process data
• Maintain organized documentation of changes, improvements, and findings
• Work collaboratively with automation programmers and technicians
Other duties may be assigned.
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student in good standing in an automation, welding, fabrication, industrial maintenance, or a related field.
• Basic understanding of welding and fabrication processes
• Interest in industrial automation, robotics, and manufacturing systems
• Basic ability to write, read, or modify automation or robotic code under supervision.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
• Willingness to work in a hands-on manufacturing environment
Preferred Qualifications
• Exposure to robotic welding systems
• Familiarity with ABB robots, RobotStudio, Allen-Bradley PLCs, and CNC machines
• Prior coursework or projects related to automation or controls
• Strong problem-solving mindset and eagerness to learn
Mentorship and Supervision
The Automation Intern will work directly with and be mentored by members of the Automation Team, receiving daily hands-on guidance and exposure to real production automation challenges.
