What is an international producer?

An International Producer is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the production of media, events, or projects that span multiple countries or regions. Their duties often include managing teams across different time zones, ensuring compliance with local regulations, and adapting content or logistics to suit diverse cultural and market needs. International Producers must have strong organizational, communication, and problem-solving skills to handle the complexities of cross-border production. They often work in industries such as film, television, advertising, or live events, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.

How does an international producer coordinate projects across different countries and time zones?

International Producers often manage teams and resources that are distributed globally, requiring strong organizational and communication skills. They typically use collaborative tools and schedule meetings that accommodate various time zones, while staying mindful of cultural differences and local regulations. Frequent communication, clear documentation, and flexibility are key to ensuring that all team members remain aligned and projects progress smoothly. This role also involves handling logistical challenges, such as obtaining permits or navigating customs requirements, to keep international projects on track.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an international producer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an International Producer, you need expertise in project management, budgeting, cross-cultural communication, and a background in media production or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard production software, international logistics platforms, and sometimes foreign language proficiency or certifications in production management are typically required. Exceptional negotiation skills, adaptability, and problem-solving abilities help navigate diverse teams and complex global projects. These skills ensure seamless coordination, cost-effective execution, and successful delivery of projects across international markets.

Job description

The New York Times International desk is looking for a Senior Producer based in New York to grow a video team and develop new approaches to our international reporting in video. Your team will work with a growing group of foreign correspondents who report in video as well as text.

The goal is to help readers understand the world through powerful video stories, reaching our core audience as well as new viewers who increasingly consume journalism in video. We will experiment with a mix of short-form, immersive vertical video that can bring readers with us on the ground.

You are a trusted editorial leader who is also a creative force excited about experimenting with new formats, and who is deeply immersed in the digital video world. You have experience making high-level editorial decisions that lift critical lines of coverage, including under deadline pressure. You are a strong manager of creative teams, an effective collaborator, and a fluid communicator and writer. You should be able to manage the deployment of teams in the field, including in security-sensitive areas. You should be comfortable routinely collaborating with multiple teams, including the newsroom Video department.

This position is based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week.ย

Responsibilities:

  • Lead coverage of a group of hybrid video correspondents, in close partnership with regional editors and colleagues in Video.
  • Devise new approaches to digital video storytelling both on and off platform.
  • Manage a group of video journalists working with correspondents in the field.
  • Drive story development and oversee scripting and editing.
  • Assign, vet and drive video story pitches and publication.
  • Lift our coverage of major storylines by working across the team to create a playbook for how to cover a region or beat in video.ย
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • The role reports to the Deputy International Editor for visuals.

Basic Qualifications:

  • 8+ years experience producing news video journalism for digital or broadcast news.
  • Excellent writing, editing and communication skills.
  • Broad knowledge of current events and news.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to supervise other video journalists and schedules, direct video correspondents.
  • Proven track record in managing video journalists.
  • Demonstrated deep command of a variety of video sources, including wire services, UGC, archival footage, motion graphics, and original footage, as well as the journalistic standards and copyright issues involved in their reproduction.
  • Proven hands-on experience in the trenches of production, including editing, shooting and field production.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience covering international news.
  • Deep curiosity about video habits and users and platforms.
  • Able to meet and make quick decisions under deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news environment.
  • A record of deploying teams of journalists in challenging field assignments.
  • High creative standards and a drive to push work to its best possible form.
