What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internal Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internal Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with internal tools, version control systems like Git, and common programming languages such as Python, Java, or C# is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to collaborate with cross-functional teams set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies ensure the development and maintenance of efficient internal systems that support organizational productivity and goals.

How do Internal Developers typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Internal Developers frequently work closely with various departments, such as IT, operations, HR, and finance, to understand their workflow needs and develop tailored solutions that improve internal processes. This often involves attending cross-functional meetings, gathering user requirements, and providing technical support and training for new tools or systems. Effective communication skills are essential, as Internal Developers must translate non-technical needs into functional software solutions that align with organizational goals. This collaborative environment not only enhances the developer's understanding of business operations but also offers opportunities to influence company-wide improvements.

What are internal developers?

Internal developers are software engineers or programmers who work within a company to build, maintain, and improve software systems that support the organization’s internal operations. Unlike external or client-facing developers, their primary focus is on creating tools, applications, and infrastructure for use by employees rather than customers. Their work can range from automating business processes to developing intranet platforms or custom management systems. Internal developers collaborate closely with other departments to ensure that the technology aligns with company needs and goals.

What jobs make around $100,000 a year?

For an internal developer or software engineer, salaries around $100,000 are common for mid- to senior-level roles with several years of experience, especially in industries like finance, technology, or healthcare. Skills in programming languages such as Java, Python, or C++, along with experience in cloud platforms or cybersecurity, can help achieve this salary level, often with additional certifications or advanced education.

What is the difference between Internal Developer vs Software Engineer?

AspectInternal Developer

Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field, coding certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentIn-house team focused on company-specific projects and systems
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in corporate, tech, and enterprise sectors
Search & Comparison IntentPeople comparing roles within the same organization or industry for internal career growth

Internal Developers and Software Engineers often share similar educational backgrounds and certifications. However, Internal Developers typically focus on developing and maintaining internal systems and tools within a specific company, working closely with internal teams. Software Engineers may work in various environments, including external clients or product development, with broader project scopes. Both roles are vital in tech industries, but Internal Developers are more specialized in internal infrastructure, making their roles distinct within organizations.

Job description

About Code Metal

Code Metal is redefining code translation for mission-critical industries, helping partners move more quickly and reliably from algorithm to silicon. Our platform accelerates deployment of DSP, RF, communications, and embedded signal processing algorithms onto heterogeneous compute targets, including GPUs, FPGAs, ASICs, and edge SoCs. We support automotive, aerospace, defense, and semiconductor partners deploying complex algorithms onto constrained hardware with speed and rigor.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Platform DevOps Engineer (CI/CD + Developer Experience) to join our team. This person will be responsible for improving how software is built, tested, released, and operated by creating reliable CI/CD systems and reducing friction throughout the developer workflow.

In this role, you will work closely with researchers, software engineers, and platform teams to improve the speed, consistency, and safety of our delivery processes. You will focus on building scalable CI/CD pipelines, streamlining engineering workflows, and creating internal tooling that helps teams move quickly with confidence.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain CI/CD pipelines and release automation across software projects.
  • Improve build, test, and deployment workflows to reduce friction and increase delivery speed.
  • Partner with engineering teams to improve local development, preview environments, and release consistency.
  • Develop and maintain internal tooling, templates, and self-service workflows that improve developer experience.
  • Implement deployment safeguards, artifact management, rollback processes, and environment handoff standards.
  • Help standardize engineering workflows across repositories, build systems, and release pipelines.
  • Collaborate with security and platform teams to embed automated checks into the software delivery lifecycle.
  • Monitor and improve pipeline reliability, performance, and developer-facing platform usability.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, release engineering, platform engineering, or CI/CD-focused roles.
  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD systems such as GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, Buildkite, or similar tools.
  • Experience improving software build, test, and deployment workflows in engineering organizations.
  • Familiarity with containers, artifact management, release processes, and deployment automation.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using Bash, Python, or similar languages.
  • Strong understanding of developer workflow pain points and experience improving internal engineering productivity.
  • Eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Top Secret security clearance

Preferred Requirements

  • Experience building internal developer platforms or self-service engineering tools.
  • Familiarity with monorepos, multi-repo release workflows, and branch or trunk-based development models.
  • Experience with preview environments, developer portals, or workflow templating.
  • Knowledge of policy checks, supply chain controls, and quality gates in CI/CD environments.
  • Experience working closely with research or product engineering teams in fast-moving environments.
  • Active U.S. security clearance (Secret or Top-Secret)

Benefits

  • Pay depends on experience, but we strive to be at the upper end of the salary range
  • Health care plan with 100% premium coverage, including medical, dental, and vision
  • 401k with 5% matching
  • Paid Time Off (uncapped vacation, plus sick and public holidays)
  • Flexible hybrid or remote work arrangement
  • Relocation assistance for qualifying employees
