Role overview
The DevX Tools team is hiring a Software Development Engineer II. The DevX Tools team is part of Engineering Platform's Developer Experience organization. We are responsible for improving the developer experience through tooling, automation, and centralization of critical information needed by developers across the organization. Our tools - including an Internal Developer Portal and an Automated Slack Messaging Systems are used daily by 280+ engineers and are foundational to how CarGurus ships, discovers, and builds software.
As a Software Development Engineer II (IC2), you will contribute to building and maintaining the internal platforms and tools that empower every product engineering team at CarGurus. You'll work alongside experienced engineers in a collaborative, hybrid environment and grow your skills across the full stack, from backend services and APIs to cloud-native integrations and agentic automations.
What you'll do
  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate well-architected software systems that improve the developer experience across CarGurus engineering.
  • Build features for Showroom, our internal developer portal that powers deployments, governance, software catalogs, and self-service workflows.
  • Support initiatives such as jobs replatforming, AI-powered code review tooling, agent-driven provisioning workflows, AI-powered AWS infrastructure provisioning and CI/CD pipeline modernization.
  • Facilitate the modernization of an internal developer portal into an AI-first developer platform, introducing AI-powered tooling to streamline workflows, enhancing the developer experience, and supporting large-scale, multi-repository engineering environments.
What you'll bring
  • 2+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Strong foundation in Java and familiarity with object-oriented design, algorithms, and data structures.
  • Experience building web applications or backend services, ideally with Spring Boot / Spring Framework.
  • A systematic approach to debugging issues within a service or module, including performance impacts.
  • Understanding of the testing pyramid and experience writing automated tests at multiple levels.
  • Familiarity with AWS services, Kubernetes, infrastructure-as-code practices and CI/CD tooling.
  • Exposure to front-end technologies (JavaScript, React, Remix) for building developer-facing UIs is a plus.
  • Interest in AI-powered developer tool and agentic workflows

The displayed range represents the expected annual base salary / On-Target Earnings (OTE) for this position. On-Target Earnings (OTE) is inclusive of base salary and on-target commission earnings, which applies exclusively to sales roles.
Individual pay within this range is determined by work location and other factors such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
This annual base salary forms part of a comprehensive Total Rewards Package. In addition to benefits, this role may qualify for discretionary bonuses/incentives and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).

$112,000-$141,000 USD
