What engineers make $500,000?

Senior software engineers, especially in high-demand fields like machine learning, cloud computing, or fintech, can earn $500,000 or more annually, often including bonuses and stock options. Achieving this level typically requires extensive experience, advanced skills, and working at large tech companies or startups with significant funding.

What jobs in the US pay 300,000 a year?

For an Internal Developer or similar high-level tech roles, salaries of $300,000 or more are typically found in senior positions such as software engineering managers, solutions architects, or technical leads at large technology companies. These roles often require extensive experience, advanced skills in programming, system architecture, and leadership, and may include bonuses or stock options that contribute to total compensation.

How do Internal Developers typically collaborate with other departments within an organization?

Internal Developers frequently work closely with various departments, such as IT, operations, HR, and finance, to understand their workflow needs and develop tailored solutions that improve internal processes. This often involves attending cross-functional meetings, gathering user requirements, and providing technical support and training for new tools or systems. Effective communication skills are essential, as Internal Developers must translate non-technical needs into functional software solutions that align with organizational goals. This collaborative environment not only enhances the developer's understanding of business operations but also offers opportunities to influence company-wide improvements.

What are internal developers?

Internal developers are software engineers or programmers who work within a company to build, maintain, and improve software systems that support the organization’s internal operations. Unlike external or client-facing developers, their primary focus is on creating tools, applications, and infrastructure for use by employees rather than customers. Their work can range from automating business processes to developing intranet platforms or custom management systems. Internal developers collaborate closely with other departments to ensure that the technology aligns with company needs and goals.

Is AI replacing developer jobs?

AI is transforming developer roles by automating routine coding tasks and assisting with code generation, but it is not replacing developers entirely. Internal developers continue to be essential for designing, implementing, and maintaining complex systems that require critical thinking and creativity, with AI tools serving as productivity enhancers rather than replacements.

What is L1, L2, L3, and L4 developer?

In the context of an Internal Developer role, L1, L2, L3, and L4 typically refer to different levels of technical expertise and experience. L1 is usually entry-level, focusing on basic tasks and learning, while L2 and L3 involve increasing responsibility, problem-solving, and system design. L4 often signifies senior or lead developers who oversee projects, mentor others, and handle complex technical challenges.

What is the difference between Internal Developer vs Software Engineer?

AspectInternal Developer

Required CredentialsBachelor's in Computer Science or related field, coding certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentIn-house team focused on company-specific projects and systems
Employer & Industry UsageCommon in corporate, tech, and enterprise sectors
Search & Comparison IntentPeople comparing roles within the same organization or industry for internal career growth

Internal Developers and Software Engineers often share similar educational backgrounds and certifications. However, Internal Developers typically focus on developing and maintaining internal systems and tools within a specific company, working closely with internal teams. Software Engineers may work in various environments, including external clients or product development, with broader project scopes. Both roles are vital in tech industries, but Internal Developers are more specialized in internal infrastructure, making their roles distinct within organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internal Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internal Developer, you need strong programming skills, a solid understanding of software development principles, and typically a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with internal tools, version control systems like Git, and common programming languages such as Python, Java, or C# is essential. Excellent problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and the capacity to collaborate with cross-functional teams set outstanding candidates apart. These competencies ensure the development and maintenance of efficient internal systems that support organizational productivity and goals.

Engineering Manager, Internal Developer Platform

Engineering Manager, Internal Developer Platform

Chainguard

Job description

The role, in a nutshell:

The Engineering Manager, Internal Developer Platform is the builder of golden paths at Chainguard. This is a people-first, technically credible leadership role for someone who believes great infrastructure should disappear into the background - empowering engineers to move faster, safer, and with less friction.

This team owns the systems, tooling, automation, and workflows that power engineering productivity across Chainguard - from CI/CD and developer environments to infrastructure automation and deployment workflows. Critically, this team is one by one chipping away at a core dependency on third-party infrastructure that has proven unreliable, reimplementing it in a way that Chainguard owns and controls. This is a high-visibility, strategically important team.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Platform & Integrations, you will lead a mature, highly experienced team - including multiple principal engineers. This is not a team that needs hand-holding. It needs a leader who knows how to manage senior talent: someone who can set context, remove obstacles, create clarity, and foster an environment where exceptional engineers can do exceptional work. Managing a team with principal engineers means your comp will not necessarily be the highest on the team - a mature manager has seen this before and understands it.

We are open to a Manager or Senior Manager depending on experience. The ideal Senior Manager candidate brings 5-10+ years of engineering management experience with a clear upward trajectory. For the manager level, we are looking for 2-3+ years of engineering management experience at minimum. We will not hire an external candidate into this role as their first management position.

What You'll Do: Developer Experience
  • Make engineers more productive every day. Continuously improve the systems, workflows, and tooling that support software development across Chainguard.
Golden Paths
  • Create opinionated, self-service platform capabilities that allow engineering teams to focus on solving customer problems rather than managing infrastructure.
CI/CD Excellence
  • Own and evolve our software delivery systems, ensuring builds, testing, releases, and deployments are fast, reliable, secure, and scalable.
Platform Reliability
  • Drive operational excellence through SLOs, observability, automation, capacity planning, and continuous improvement.
Team Leadership
  • Lead a highly experienced team of senior and principal engineers. Remove obstacles, create clarity, and foster an environment where engineers can do exceptional work.
  • Manage without micromanaging - set goals and create conditions for the team to execute. Ask once and trust the follow-through.
Infrastructure Automation
  • Advance Infrastructure as Code, GitOps, and platform automation initiatives that improve consistency and reduce operational burden.
Technical Strategy
  • Help define and execute the roadmap for the Internal Developer Platform while balancing short-term needs with long-term investments.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with application teams, security teams, and engineering leadership to understand developer needs and prioritize platform investments.
What We're Looking For: Engineering Leadership
  • 2-3+ years of engineering management experience for Manager level; 5-10+ years for Senior Manager level.
  • Proven experience managing highly experienced and senior engineers - including principal-level talent.
  • Comfort with the compensation dynamics of managing senior individual contributors.
  • Strong coaching, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Technical enough to read and occasionally contribute to code - this is not a pure people management role. Chainguard managers are expected to stay technically engaged.
Platform & Infrastructure Domain
  • Background in platform engineering, SRE, DevOps, or infrastructure - someone with that as a basis will have the right domain expertise to lead this team.
  • Understanding of and appreciation for the open source and security world.
  • Experience building and operating Internal Developer Platforms, golden path tooling, or similar engineering productivity systems.
SRE & Operations
  • Experience with incident management, SLOs, observability, capacity planning, and operational excellence.
Technical Experience
  • Strong Kubernetes and cloud infrastructure experience.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation and GitOps workflows.
  • Deep experience with GitHub and/or GitLab administration, workflows, and CI/CD systems.
Nice to Have:
  • Background in Linux distributions or OS-level systems.
  • Experience in security-focused organizations or with software supply chain security practices.
  • SRE management experience.
  • Prior experience at DigitalOcean, Rackspace, or similar infrastructure-focused technology companies.
About Us

We live and breathe our company values:

  • We are customer obsessed - We focus on delivering solutions to our customers that create value and make their lives better.
  • We have a bias for intentional action - We prioritize, plan, try things, and fail fast.
  • We don't take ourselves too seriously (but we do serious work) - We are solving an important problem which takes focus, but we also like to enjoy the journey.
  • We trust each other and assume good intentions - We're transparent with decisions to empower team members to make well-informed decisions.
