What you will do:

The Cost Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of cost accounting within a dynamic Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) environment. This role requires a strategic thinker with hands-on experience in cost analysis, inventory management, and financial reporting, as well as deep familiarity with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations (FO). The ideal candidate will play a key role in driving profitability, enhancing operational efficiency, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards. A critical focus of this role will be the development and implementation of robust costing methodologies that reinforce internal controls and establish a sustainable foundation for operational performance measurement and continuous improvement. The successful candidate will champion cross-team collaboration, actively engaging with stakeholders throughout the organization, and will lead initiatives to educate and develop team members and partners on cost accounting principles and processes.

Here's a day in the life:

  • Lead the cost accounting function, including the design, implementation, and refinement of costing methodologies that strengthen internal controls and provide a reliable foundation for the measurement, review, and enhancement of operational performance.

  • Develop, implement, and maintain cost accounting systems and processes within Microsoft Dynamics 365 FO, including transactional mapping & process optimization

  • Enable & influence effective analysis of manufacturing costs, variances, and margins to provide actionable insights for management

  • Oversee inventory valuation including reserve estimates, reconciliation, and reporting in accordance with GAAP and company policies.

  • Collaborate with operations, supply chain, IT, and finance teams to improve cost control and optimize expense management through cross-functional initiatives and knowledge sharing.

  • Facilitate workshops, training sessions, and resources to educate team members and other departments on cost accounting systems, methodologies, and best practices.

  • Ensure accurate standard costing for all products and support annual standard cost roll processes.

  • Partner with IT and Controllership to develop, document and maintain cost accounting processes, procedures and internal controls to ensure accuracy and compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and best-in-class internal control environments.

  • Oversee and manage cost accounting and inventory valuation aspects of monthly close processes including closure of production orders, approval of journal entries, account reconciliation review and cost of goods sold and inventory analysis.

  • Monitor and review BOMs (Bill of Materials), routings, and production orders in Dynamics 365 FO for accuracy

  • Collaborate with Director of Accounting to support internal and external audits by providing documentation and analysis of cost accounting and inventory policies and processes.

  • Support year-end and periodic physical inventories in partnership with Supply Chain and Warehouse Management teams.

  • Partner with Member Services Accounting team to ensure accurate accounting and reporting of milk purchases and dairy costs throughout the year and during month end close

  • Identify opportunities for process improvement and automation within the cost accounting function.

  • Adaptability and agility to thrive in a dynamic, market-driven environment

  • Work under pressure, meet deadlines, and be flexible in working on multiple projections simultaneously

  • Demonstrate excellent time-management skills with the ability to work independently and meet goals with little supervision

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA or CMA highly desirable.

  • 10+ years of cost accounting experience, with a focus on the Consumer Packaged Goods industry, and at least 5 years of progressive leadership experience.

  • Proven expertise in Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, particularly in cost accounting modules.

  • Strong understanding of manufacturing operations, inventory management, and standard costing.

  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other financial analysis tools.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills, with demonstrated success in cross-team and cross-functional engagement and alignment.

  • Ability to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing across multiple teams in a fast-paced, cross-functional environment.

  • Experience supporting audits and ensuring compliance with accounting standards.

  • Strong working knowledge of inventory costs accounting principles, inventory accounting, margin analysis and generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

  • Experience implementing or optimizing cost accounting processes in Dynamics 365 FO.

  • Strong analytical skills - advanced analysis and Excel skills and familiarity using and extracting data from various systems.

  • Knowledge of supply chain, procurement, and production workflows in CPG companies.

  • Dairy company experience is preferred.

  • Strong communication and presentation skills with ability to convey complex financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
