Intern Union information

What is an intern union?

An Intern Union is an organized group of interns who come together to advocate for better working conditions, fair wages, and protections within their workplace or industry. By banding together, interns can collectively bargain with employers, ensuring their rights are respected and their voices are heard. Intern unions may also provide resources, support, and representation in case of workplace disputes or challenges. These unions are increasingly common as more interns seek fair treatment and compensation for their work.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an intern union member typically expect to be involved with during their internship?

As an Intern Union member, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that support union operations, such as assisting with research, organizing events, drafting communications, and supporting outreach initiatives. Interns often collaborate closely with experienced union staff and may participate in meetings, help with advocacy campaigns, and perform administrative tasks. This exposure provides valuable insight into union activities and helps interns develop practical skills related to labor relations and collective bargaining. The work environment is usually collaborative, with mentorship opportunities and regular feedback to help you grow professionally.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern union member, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Union Intern, you need a foundational understanding of labor relations, collective bargaining, and basic research or administrative skills, often gained through coursework in labor studies or related fields. Familiarity with office productivity software, digital communication tools, and possibly online organizing platforms like Action Network is important. Strong interpersonal communication, organization, and a passion for advocacy help interns stand out in union environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for effectively supporting union campaigns, building relationships, and contributing to team goals.
