Job description

Based at our Ann Arbor, MI site, we are seeking a Bioengineering Intern with a strong interest in mechanical systems, biological experimentation, and instrumentation for life science applications. This role is designed for current master's or PhD level students in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field who have a solid technical foundation, some exposure to programming, and familiarity with working in a BSL2 laboratory.

You will work onsite alongside experienced engineers and scientists and will receive training and guidance on our tools, processes, products, and lab practices. The focus of this role is on experimental work (wet lab and system-level tests), data analysis, and mechanical/system testing.

This is an on-site role at our Ann Arbor, MI facility.

What you will accomplish together with us:

As an intern, you will work under the guidance of senior engineers and scientists. Typical tasks include:

  • Work in laboratory and prototype/testing spaces, setting up experiments, interpreting and working from mechanical drawings to support assembly, testing and troubleshooting of experimental setups and instruments
  • Assist with robotic and automated workflows by preparing equipment, running automated test sequences, monitoring system performance, and helping refine processes alongside engineers and scientists.
  • Build and modify earlystage prototypes, execute experiments, and collect data.
  • Work in a BSL2 environment assisting in cell culture preparation and execution of experiments.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (engineering, biology, quality, manufacturing) to ensure that experimental designs, instruments, and protocols are practical, safe, and reproducible.
  • Help maintain clear documentation, including lab notebooks, test reports, experimental protocols, and basic work instructions.
  • The candidate is expected to be careful, curious, and willing to learn in both engineering and biological lab contexts.

What will convince us:

  • Currently enrolled in a Master's or PhD program in Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Comfort working onsite in both lab and prototype/test environments, handling mechanical and biological materials with appropriate safety awareness.
  • Familiarity with robotic or automated workflows.
  • Prior prototyping and experimentation experience in a laboratory environment.
  • Strong understanding of core engineering concepts.
  • Foundational understanding of biological lab work in a BSL2 environment (lab experience is preferred).
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, including basic views, dimensions, and simple assembly drawings.
  • Programming ability in scientific workflows (e.g., Python, MATLAB, R, C# or basic C++).

We Value:

  • Strong attention to detail and documentation.
  • Good communication skills.
  • A growth mindset, willingness to follow safety procedures rigorously, and genuine interest in combining engineering and biology to solve practical problems.
  • Identification with our core values: Sustainability, Openness, Enjoyment

What we offer

  • Hands-on experience at the interface of engineering and biology, working on real systems and experiments.
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and scientists.
  • A collaborative, learning-focused environment where asking questions and proposing ideas is encouraged.
  • Exposure to development of bioinstrumentation and life science tools.
  • The opportunity to contribute to meaningful projects that support life science and bioprocessing research.
