What is intern management?

Intern management refers to the process of overseeing and guiding interns within an organization. This includes recruiting, onboarding, training, assigning projects, providing feedback, and evaluating performance. Effective intern management ensures that interns gain valuable experience while contributing meaningfully to the company’s objectives. Managers in this role help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world work, supporting interns’ professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Manager, you need experience in team leadership, program coordination, and a solid understanding of the organization's industry, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with project management tools, HR software, and onboarding systems is usually required. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster a positive and productive environment for interns. These skills ensure effective guidance, smooth program operations, and successful intern development within the organization.

What are some common challenges faced when managing interns, and how can they be addressed effectively?

One common challenge in intern management is balancing the interns' learning experiences with the team's productivity goals. Interns may require additional guidance and feedback as they acclimate to the workplace, which can be time-consuming for managers. To address this, it's helpful to establish clear onboarding procedures, set defined expectations, and create structured check-ins. Encouraging open communication and providing regular feedback ensures interns feel supported and helps managers track progress effectively. Additionally, pairing interns with mentors within the team can foster skill development and integration.

Rosie's Place was founded in 1974 as the first women's shelter in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunities, and find security in their lives.

Over the years, we have become much more than a shelter. We are a multi-service community center that not only provides meals and shelter but also creates answers for thousands of women a year through wide-ranging support, housing, and education services. Rosie's Place relies on the generous support of individuals, foundations, and corporations and does not accept any city, state or federal funding.

OPPORTUNITY:

Rosie's Place is seeking a detail-oriented team member with a passion for human services to join our Community Engagement team. The Volunteer and Intern Manager reports to the Director of Community Engagement and is responsible for overseeing individual volunteering at Rosie's Place. Working closely with the Community Partnership Manager, the Volunteer and Intern Manager collaborates with staff across the organization to engage volunteers. This position supervises the Volunteer Services Associate, and together they create transformative volunteer experiences that inspire social justice action.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage recruitment, screening, selection, orientation, training, supervision and recognition of a year-round internship program.
  • Execute a communication plan with volunteers and interested community members in person as well as through email, phone calls and virtual meetings.
  • Provide direct supervision to volunteers in select programs including the Women's Education Center.
  •  Supervision of Volunteer Services Associate, temporary department employees, volunteers and interns.
  • Establish, maintain and cultivate collaborative relationships with all stakeholders including staff, guests, volunteers and community members.
