The Role

Epic Business intelligence developers (BIDs) create analytics content for end users and third parties who require Epic data tools or exports. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust BI solutions native to the Epic reporting suite as well other enterprise data platforms. BIDs design and create analytics solutions based on an in-depth knowledge of Epic operational system usage and requires a deep understanding of system build, end user workflows, and patterns of use. Both technical skills required to design and write content paired with the operational knowledge to understand what report consumers need to see are critical to the success of a BID.

Key Responsibilities

  • Translatesdata needs of the businessto structure and provide recurring data extracts or develop custom solutions for an operational or strategic problem.

  • Work closely with Epic Application analysts, database administrators and architects, and business users to understand reporting needs.

  • Provide technical support and training to end-users on BI tools and data interpretation

  • Responsible for creating, maintaining, and updating Epic Reporting Content to display Epic data from Chronicles, Clarity, and Caboodle

  • Responsible for configuration and testing Epic-released and Foundation System content for all reporting tools. This includes configuring settings and security groups for custom metrics/design as well. Tools include:

    • Reporting Workbench

    • SlicerDicer and custom filters

    • Radar Dashboarding

    • Cubes

    • Extracts

    • Third-party BI tools

    • Epic data in Caboodle

    • Cogito SQL

  • Develops effective auditing and validation processes toensureaccurateandtimelyavailability of data.

  • Responsible for distributing analytics content to data consumers.

  • Responsible for maintaining the Analytics Catalog and associated metadata records. Also responsible to maintain documentation for data sources, report logic, and data definitions

  • Ensure all reporting solutions comply with HIPAA and relevant data privacy policies and regulations

Skills and Experience

  • A degree in engineering, physics, computer sciences, math, information systems, or statistics (preferred)

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Critical thinking and an analytical mind; continuous learner mindset with a focused attention to detail

  • User-focused design and data visualization skills, leverages the fundamentals of report design

  • Proficiency with SQL and relational database concepts

  • Familiarity with Epic applications and database structure, with the ability to gain an in-depth understanding of the data model through data model classes (if not already certified)

  • Ability to understand data structures that could benefit the entire data environment:

    • For financial reporting prior experience working with an AR system is desirable

    • For clinical reporting: prior experience working with an EMR system is desirable

  • Ability to work with technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Translation of complex technical concepts

Minimum Years of Experience

  • Bachelor's degree and 5 years' experience in a Data Analyst role, in a healthcare setting (required) or 7 years of related experience in lieu of degree.

  • Experience in relationaldatabase, report writing, and/or SQL (required)

  • Experience with analytics and reporting in a healthcare environment (required)

  • Epic Clarity Data Model Certification Required (see below)

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • Required to obtain or have 1 of the 3 data model Certifications/Accreditations:

    • Access Data Model, Clinical Data Model, or Revenue Data Model

  • Required to hold or obtain Cogito Certification/Accreditation (required)

  • In addition, BIDs who are developing reports for a specific application should study the materials for the data model knowledge track for that Epic application

  • Experience with PowerBI, Tableau, or other 3rd party visualization tool (preferred)
