AspectIntern ArchitectArchitectural Designer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or has completed architecture degree; may be working towards licensureUsually holds a degree in architecture; may or may not be licensed
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, often in architecture firms, gaining practical experienceDesign-focused roles, often in architecture or design firms, involved in project development
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly used for entry-level positions in architecture firmsUsed for design roles, sometimes at a similar level but with more responsibility

Intern Architects are in the early stages of their architecture careers, focusing on gaining practical experience and working towards licensure. Architectural Designers typically have more design responsibilities and may be more involved in project development, often with a completed degree. Both roles are integral to architecture firms but differ mainly in experience level and scope of work.

What are the typical responsibilities and learning opportunities for an intern architect within an architectural firm?

As an Intern Architect, you can expect to assist with developing design concepts, creating drawings and 3D models, and preparing construction documents under the guidance of licensed architects. You'll likely participate in project meetings, collaborate with engineers and consultants, and gain exposure to building codes and project workflows. This role provides hands-on experience with design software, insight into the full project lifecycle, and opportunities to build a professional portfolio. Internships are designed to foster growth, so expect regular feedback and mentorship while working on real-world projects.

How to get an internship in architecture?

To secure an internship as an architect, candidates should have a relevant degree in architecture or a related field, build a strong portfolio showcasing their work, and gain experience with design software like AutoCAD or Revit. Applying to firms, networking with professionals, and demonstrating enthusiasm for architecture are also important steps.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Architect, you need a solid foundation in architectural design principles, drafting, and building codes, typically backed by a professional degree in architecture. Familiarity with software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as progress toward licensure through programs like the Architectural Experience Program (AXP), is highly valued. Strong attention to detail, teamwork, and effective communication help an intern architect excel in collaborating with colleagues and clients. These skills and qualifications are vital for producing quality design work, supporting project delivery, and advancing toward full architectural licensure.

What does an intern architect do?

An Intern Architect assists licensed architects in the design and planning of buildings and structures. Their tasks typically include preparing drawings, creating models, conducting research, and helping with project documentation. They work under the supervision of a registered architect as they gain practical experience required for licensure. Intern Architects also collaborate with clients, engineers, and contractors to ensure that projects meet design, safety, and regulatory standards.

Are you an experienced architect looking to take the next step in your career? We are seeking a Project Architect to join our Building Systems team, where you'll collaborate directly with senior architects, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff. This is an exciting opportunity for a proactive leader who thrives on driving teams toward excellence in design, production, calculations, bid item quantification, cost estimates, report preparation, and fieldwork.

As a Project Architect, you'll have the opportunity to lead and mentor your colleagues while utilizing the latest in technical software and innovative design techniques. You'll be responsible for ensuring high-quality, efficient production across multidiscipline projects. In this role, you'll serve as the technical lead for projects, reporting to the Senior Architect (Technical Services Manager) while fostering a collaborative and forward-thinking environment.

Our focus on work-life balance includes a hybrid work option, giving you the flexibility to work in the office and at home. At ms consultants, you’re more than just an employee — you're part of a team working toward a brighter, more sustainable future.
What You'll Do:

  • Production related project tasks within the following software platforms: Revit, AutoCAD, Excel, and other Microsoft Office platforms
  • Assisting the project team leaders to align Client & Technical Design Standards for each project.
  • Creating high quality documents and checking your own work before hand-offs to peer reviews.
  • Monitoring of the team’s production hours and compare the effort expended to project budgets
  • Lead the coordination effort between other in-house technical disciplines
  • Manage the production of multiple team members for multiple concurrent projects
What You'll Bring:
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture from ABET accredited or NCARB certified institution; master's degree preferred but not required.
  • Proven experience in the field, with relevant training or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience working within technical project teams and collaborating with cross-functional service groups.
  • Proficiency in technical software, including Revit, AutoCAD, Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills, with a strong ability to collaborate, think creatively, and lead teams effectively.
