What is intermodal drayage?

Intermodal drayage refers to the short-distance transportation of shipping containers or cargo between different modes of transportation, such as from a port to a rail yard or from a rail terminal to a warehouse. Drayage is a crucial link in the supply chain, ensuring that goods efficiently move between ships, trains, and trucks. Drivers or logistics companies specializing in intermodal drayage often operate within a metropolitan area and must adhere to port regulations, schedules, and safety standards. This job is essential for maintaining the flow of goods in global and domestic trade.

What are the most common challenges faced by intermodal drayage drivers and how can they be managed?

Intermodal drayage drivers often face challenges such as strict delivery schedules, port congestion, and coordinating with multiple parties like terminals, warehouses, and dispatchers. Time management and clear communication are crucial to successfully navigate these challenges. Many companies provide real-time tracking technology and ongoing training to help drivers streamline pickups and deliveries, while fostering strong relationships with logistics teams can also ease coordination and resolve issues quickly.

To excel as an Intermodal Drayage Driver, you need a valid commercial driver's license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of transportation regulations. For over 40 years, Manchester Motor Freight has provided the finest quality trucking service in the region. In 2018 MMF opened an office in Salt Lake City, UT and now serves Utah, Idaho, Nevada, Wyoming and Colorado as well. Recently we also expanded to Denver, CO which is very exciting!
Our reputation for fast and efficient transportation is testimonial to our dedication to being the best trucking company in the intermodal drayage industry. We utilize a diverse and loyal group of experienced owner-operator truck drivers who bring a wealth of knowledge and dedication to our trucking operations. On the office and administration side our team is the best in the business. Many of our dispatchers are former Manchester Motor Freight truck drivers who have transitioned into the dispatching roll. They know first-hand how to treat drivers fairly and with respect and what it takes to manage a successful intermodal drayage trucking operation. Our dispatchers are conscious of all the needs of our truck drivers, the requirements at the specific CSX and Norfolk Southern Railroad terminals in Springfield and Worcester, and Ayer, MA and Albany-Mechanicsville, NY, and the Union Pacific terminal in Salt Lake City, UT and Denver, CO, as well as the requirements of each of our specific customers.
