What is an intermediate interior designer?

Intermediate Interior Designers are professionals with several years of experience who work on the planning, design, and execution of interior spaces. They typically support senior designers and may manage smaller projects independently, handling tasks such as creating design concepts, preparing drawings, selecting materials, and coordinating with clients and contractors. Their role bridges the gap between junior designers, who focus more on support tasks, and senior designers, who oversee overall project direction. Intermediate designers often have a solid understanding of design principles, materials, codes, and project management. They play a vital role in ensuring that design projects are completed efficiently and meet client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate interior designer?

To thrive as an Intermediate Interior Designer, you need a solid background in design principles, space planning, and a relevant degree or diploma in interior design. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with knowledge of building codes and materials, is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and team members. These skills ensure functional, aesthetically pleasing spaces that meet client needs and industry standards.

How does an intermediate interior designer typically collaborate with architects and other team members during a project?

Intermediate Interior Designers often work closely with architects, engineers, and contractors throughout a project's lifecycle. They participate in meetings to review design concepts, coordinate on technical requirements, and ensure that the interior elements align with overall architectural plans. Regular communication is essential for resolving design challenges, sourcing materials, and maintaining project timelines. This collaborative environment helps designers develop a deeper understanding of interdisciplinary processes, which is valuable for career progression.

Job description

Interior Designer – Intermediate
Are you an experienced designer who thrives in dynamic environments and loves to bring big ideas to life? At Mancini, we’re looking for an Intermediate Interior Designer to join our collaborative, forward-thinking team. If you’re passionate about both the creative and technical sides of design, eager to work in a team environment, and ready to dive into diverse projects - this is your moment.

What We’re Looking For
A sharp, self-starting designer with around 5 years of experience and a background in commercial interiors. Fluency in Revit, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite, and knowledge of Rhino, SketchUp, or Lumion. A problem solver who is organized, and owns your work from start to finish. Whether you come from a traditional or unconventional design path we are looking for people ready to collaborate, adapt, and create with purpose.

What You’ll Do

You’ll be hands-on from start to finish—developing concepts, refining details, and ensuring seamless execution. Your day-to-day includes:

  • Creating detailed FF&E specs for bids and RFPs
  • Managing site verifications and updating core plans in Revit
  • Performing area calculations under leadership guidance
  • Presenting ideas with clarity—through sketches, 3D models, and visuals
  • Coordinating with consultants, vendors, and internal teams
  • Supporting project goals with innovative design solutions
  • Tracking project schedules across multiple assignments
  • Assisting with code compliance (ADA, building code) alongside the Project Architect
  • Reviewing submittals and RFIs during construction

Think we’re a match?

Even if you don’t meet every qualification—reach out. We’re open to great people with fresh perspectives.

Why Mancini?

We’re a people-first, innovation-driven firm that embraces individuality, flexibility, and fun. With studios in New York City, New Jersey, Seattle, West Palm Beach, Tampa, and Phoenix, Mancini offers the reach of a national firm with the close-knit culture of a local studio. Whether you’re passionate about cutting-edge technology, bold design experimentation, or simply want to work with a collaborative team that values your voice, Mancini is the place to take your career to the next level. Here, we’re always pushing boundaries—together.

To all recruiters:

We only accept agency submitted resumes from agencies we have a formal contract or agreement with and only after that agreement is active. Mancini Duffy is not responsible for fees associated with unsolicited recruiter submissions.
