What does an interior designer consultant do?

An Interior Designer Consultant provides expert advice on how to enhance the aesthetics, functionality, and comfort of interior spaces. They work with clients to understand their needs and preferences, propose design concepts, select materials, colors, and furnishings, and may help oversee the implementation of the design plan. Unlike full-service interior designers, consultants often focus on guidance and recommendations rather than managing entire projects. Their goal is to help clients achieve a cohesive, stylish, and practical interior that fits their budget and lifestyle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interior designer consultant?

To thrive as an Interior Designer Consultant, you need strong spatial awareness, creativity, and a solid understanding of design principles, often supported by a degree in interior design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite, as well as relevant certifications like NCIDQ, is typically required. Exceptional communication, project management, and client relationship skills set outstanding consultants apart. These skills ensure functional, visually appealing spaces that meet client needs while adhering to industry standards and project timelines.

How do interior designer consultants typically collaborate with clients and other professionals during a project?

Interior Designer Consultants work closely with clients to understand their vision, preferences, and budget, often starting with consultations and mood boards. They regularly coordinate with architects, contractors, and vendors to ensure that design plans are feasible and materials are sourced appropriately. Effective communication and organization are key, as consultants must oversee timelines, resolve issues on-site, and adapt designs based on feedback. This collaborative process ensures that the final result aligns with both client expectations and practical constraints.

Job description

STORYLAND STUDIOS
INTERIOR DESIGNER

Department: Interior Design | Architecture
Schedule: Full – Time

Location: Southern California residents are preferred for occasional in-person client and team collaboration. Hybrid arrangements are welcomed, and remote candidates will be considered for the right fit.
Note: We are currently hiring TWO Interior Designers to fill this role

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for an Interior Designer who enjoys both the creative and the technical side of design.

In this role, you’ll help shape spaces from early concept through construction — translating ideas into thoughtful environments that are not only inspiring, but practical and buildable.

You’ll work closely with architects, consultants, vendors, and project teams to bring interiors to life across a range of environments. Some days that might mean refining a gallery layout, developing custom millwork, or coordinating materials and lighting that support the story a space is meant to tell.

We’re looking for someone who can think creatively, stay organized, and take ownership of their work while collaborating closely with the rest of the team.

Proficiency in Revit (required)

WHAT YOU’LL DO

· Develop interior design concepts that align with the client’s vision, brand, and functional goals

· Support space planning efforts and coordinate with architects on interior layouts

· Prepare design presentations including mood boards, renderings, and material palettes

· Select finishes, furnishings, lighting, and other interior elements

· Produce detailed construction documentation in Revit, including:

o Floor plans and interior elevations

o Reflected ceiling plans

o Finish plans and schedules

o Millwork and interior detailing

o FF&E specifications and furniture layouts

· Coordinate with architects, engineers, consultants, contractors, and vendors throughout the design process

· Conduct site visits and support construction administration activities

· Respond to RFIs and help resolve design challenges during construction

· Maintain organized documentation and ensure the design intent is carried through installation

PROJECTS YOU MAY WORK ON

Our projects span a variety of environments, and experience in any of the following areas is valuable:

Community, Worship & Cultural Spaces

· Churches, community gathering spaces, and environments where thoughtful design supports how people gather, worship, reflect, and connect

· Museums and cultural institutions

· Gallery layouts, circulation planning, and artifact display coordination

· Collaboration with exhibit designers and lighting consultants

· Durable and conservation-appropriate material selections

Commercial Environments

  • Workplace and office interiors
  • Retail and customer-facing spaces
  • Code compliance and life-safety considerations
  • Budget-conscious material sourcing

  • Travel: Occasional travel may be required for project meetings, site visits, and installation support. Depending on the project, this may include travel by plane to visit project sites, fabrication partners, or installations.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE PARTY

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design or a related field
  • 5+ years established professional interior design experience.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating both creative design and technical documentation
  • Experience working across multiple project types (cultural, commercial, residential, etc.)
  • Confidence managing your scope within a collaborative project team
  • Knowledge of building codes, ADA requirements, and construction standards
  • Strong material specification and detailing skills
  • Proficiency in Revit (required)
  • Experience with SketchUp or other 3D modeling tools is helpful
  • Confidence in presenting ideas and communicating directly with clients

Bonus Points If You have...

  • NCIDQ certification (or working toward it)
  • Experience with project budgeting or cost estimating
  • Construction administration experience

The Kind of Designer Who Thrives Here

  • Detail-oriented with strong documentation skills
  • Creative, but grounded in how things actually get built
  • Comfortable shifting between different project types and design approaches
  • Sensitive to the cultural and emotional significance of the spaces we design
  • Collaborative, proactive, and solutions-oriented

A Note on This Role

This role is best suited for an Interior Designer who enjoys both the creative and technical sides of interior design.

You should feel comfortable taking an idea from concept through construction documentation and coordinating with the broader project team to see it implemented. While we work collaboratively, this role requires someone who can manage their scope, produce clear documentation, and help ensure design intent carries through to the built environment.
