What is an interim chief revenue officer?

An Interim Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) is a senior executive temporarily brought into an organization to oversee and optimize all revenue-generating functions, such as sales, marketing, and customer success. Their primary role is to drive revenue growth, develop effective sales strategies, and align teams to achieve business goals during a period of transition or change. Interim CROs are often hired when a company is searching for a permanent CRO, undergoing restructuring, or seeking to accelerate revenue growth quickly. They bring specialized expertise and a fresh perspective to help organizations navigate challenges and seize new opportunities.

What are the typical challenges an interim chief revenue officer faces when stepping into an organization mid-cycle?

As an Interim Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), one of the main challenges is quickly assessing the existing sales and revenue strategies to identify areas needing immediate attention. Interim CROs must rapidly build trust with sales, marketing, and customer success teams while aligning everyone around clear revenue goals. They often work within tight timeframes to implement process improvements or turnaround initiatives, requiring strong adaptability and communication skills. Balancing swift action with thoughtful analysis is crucial to making a meaningful impact during their tenure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interim chief revenue officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interim Chief Revenue Officer, you need extensive experience in sales leadership, revenue management, and strategic planning, usually backed by a relevant degree and proven executive track record. Familiarity with CRM platforms, sales analytics tools, and performance management systems is highly valuable in this role. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and stakeholder management skills help drive alignment and accelerate change within organizations. These competencies are critical for quickly identifying growth opportunities, implementing effective strategies, and ensuring sustained revenue performance during transitional periods.

What is the difference between Interim Chief Revenue Officer vs Sales Director?

Job description

About Black Box Intelligence

Black Box Intelligence (BBI) is the leading Guest Experience and AI platform for the restaurant industry, delivering Guest Experience surveys, performance benchmarking, guest sentiment, financial and workforce intelligence to the world's top restaurant brands. We have transformed from a legacy data provider into a modern AI-enabled SaaS and managed-services platform,  and we're looking for a Chief Revenue Officer to lead the next phase of growth.

The Role

BBI is seeking a Chief Revenue Officer to own and scale all revenue-generating and customer-facing commercial functions, Sales, Customer Success, and Marketing, across our restaurant SaaS platform. Reporting to the CEO, the CRO will partner closely with the executive team and board on growth strategy, retention, brand, and go-to-market execution in a PE-backed environment.

What You'll Do
  • Own the full revenue engine: new business sales, expansion, and retention
  • Build and lead high-performing Sales, Customer Success, and Marketing teams
  • Set and execute go-to-market strategy across enterprise and mid-market restaurant/hospitality accounts
  • Identify core growth opportunities and build channel-specific growth plans annually and multi-year, with clear goals/targets by team and individual
  • Drive rapid, sustainable revenue growth in a subscription/SaaS model, with an eye toward customer acquisition, retention, and EBITDA expansion
  • Oversee Marketing's brand-building and demand-gen efforts, including webinars, tradeshows, and digital/content channels
  • Reduce churn and expand net revenue retention through proactive partnership with the  Customer Success leadership
  • Develop pricing tactics, sales methodology, and performance metrics/KPIs; hold the org accountable to them
  • Build the organizational structure and culture needed to maximize sales performance and customer satisfaction
  • Maintain a pulse on the competitive landscape and evolving customer needs to inform product/services strategy
  • Report on pipeline health, forecast accuracy, and revenue performance to the CEO, board, and PE ownership
  • Represent BBI as an ambassador to the broader restaurant community
What You Bring
  • 7+ years of commercial executive leadership, ideally in restaurant, hospitality, or foodservice technology/SaaS
  • 5+ years of recent experience building, growing, and leading a revenue-generating organization (Sales, CS, and/or Marketing)
  • Proven track record of delivering rapid revenue growth in a B2B SaaS environment
  • Experience leading Sales, Customer Success, and Marketing under one commercial organization
  • Strong track record of building, scaling, and coaching high-performing teams
  • Comfort operating in a PE-backed environment - data-driven, accountable, fast-moving
  • Deep understanding of subscription economics: ARR, NRR, churn, expansion, CAC/LTV
  • Entrepreneurial, hands-on "player-coach" approach
  • Established network within the restaurant/hospitality industry
  • Forward-thinking and tech-savvy with modern CRM and sales/marketing automation experience
  • Executive presence with boards, investors, and enterprise customers
  • Bachelor's degree required; MBA a plus but not required
