What are 'Interconnect' jobs?

Interconnect jobs typically refer to roles involved in designing, maintaining, and managing the physical and logical connections between different network or system components, such as cables, switches, routers, and data centers. These professionals ensure that communication between devices, servers, or networks is reliable and efficient. Interconnect jobs are commonly found in telecommunications, data centers, and IT infrastructure sectors. Responsibilities may include installation, troubleshooting, and optimization of interconnection systems to support smooth data transfer and connectivity.

What is the difference between Interconnect vs Network Technician?

AspectInterconnectNetwork Technician
CertificationsFCC, Cisco, CompTIA Network+CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA
Work EnvironmentTelecom facilities, data centers, installation sitesOffice, data centers, client sites
Industry UsageTelecommunications, data servicesIT, networking, telecommunications
Job FocusConnecting telecom infrastructure, fiber optics, hardware setupConfiguring, troubleshooting, maintaining networks

Interconnect specialists focus on establishing and maintaining physical telecom connections, often working with fiber optics and hardware. Network Technicians handle network setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of data and voice networks. While both roles involve networking skills, Interconnect roles are more hardware and infrastructure-oriented, whereas Network Technicians focus on network performance and configuration.

How does an Interconnect Engineer typically collaborate with other teams during large-scale network deployments?

Interconnect Engineers play a crucial role in coordinating with network architects, data center operations, and vendor partners to ensure seamless connectivity between systems. They are often involved in cross-functional meetings to align on network requirements, troubleshoot connectivity issues, and manage timelines for cabling and hardware installations. Effective communication and documentation are essential, as Interconnect Engineers must relay technical specifications and progress updates to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. This collaborative approach helps maintain network reliability and supports rapid scaling as organizational needs evolve.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interconnect Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as an Interconnect Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, signal integrity, and circuit design, typically supported by a relevant degree. Proficiency with simulation tools like HFSS, SPICE, and CAD software, as well as knowledge of industry standards and testing equipment, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills in this role. These competencies are vital to ensure reliable, high-performance connections in complex electronic systems and successful project outcomes.

Job Summary

GlobalFoundries Fab8 is seeking an experienced R&D interconnect and interposer integration engineer to become part of our Quantum Advanced Packaging team. The primary responsibility of this position is to own development and integration of cryogenic, superconducting interconnect and interposer technologies enabling scalable quantum system integration.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Lead development of superconducting interconnect and interposer integration processes (e.g., Nb, Al, In, superconducting liners, redistribution layers).
  • Develop 2.5D and 3D cryogenic interposer architectures for quantum systems.
  • Define routing, metallization, and integration schemes optimized for:
    • Low-loss RF/microwave signal propagation
    • Minimal thermal leakage
    • Cryogenic reliability
  • Own end-to-end integration of interposer and interconnect flows across:
    • Wafer-level processes (RDL, TSV/TOV, via formation)
    • Die-level integration (bump, bonding, assembly interfaces)
  • Drive process integration planning to enable new capabilities and prototyping across programs.
  • Architect and integrate multi-die quantum packaging solutions, including:
    • Qubit die + control electronics
    • Superconducting interposers
  • Support chiplet-style and system-level integration for scalable quantum systems.
