What is an interactive graphic designer?

Interactive Graphic Designers are creative professionals who design digital experiences that respond to user inputs, such as websites, apps, and multimedia presentations. They combine visual design skills with knowledge of user experience (UX) and interactivity to create engaging and functional interfaces. Their work often includes creating animations, interactive elements, and prototypes, collaborating closely with developers and other designers to bring ideas to life. The goal is to make digital products visually appealing and easy to use for the intended audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interactive graphic designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interactive Graphic Designer, you need strong skills in visual design, user experience (UX), and proficiency with design principles, usually supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Familiarity with design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, and interactive prototyping tools is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration are essential soft skills for producing engaging and user-friendly interactive experiences. These competencies ensure the creation of visually compelling and functional designs that enhance user engagement and meet project goals.

Job description

Graphic Designer

Location: Alexandria, VA
Title: Graphic Designer
Reports to: Senior Graphic Designer

Why You’ll Love Working at RedPeg:
Voted as one of The Washington Post’s Top Workplaces, we are an independent full-service experiential marketing agency that connects brands to the consumers they need to reach through customized, personal engagement. Every day, we come together to create experiences that inspire extraordinary memories. With our main office in the Washington D.C. metro area, we work with a roster of incredible brands including Capital One, In-N-Out, Joola, Marriott Bonvoy, Meta, Niantic, Nike, Santander Bank, and Virginia Lottery. We’re looking for highly personable, passionate, and innovative marketers to bring true entrepreneurial spirit, a growth mindset, and independent thinking to our team!
Why RedPegsters Are Comfortable Being Their True Self:

RedPeg is dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace where employees of all backgrounds can contribute and thrive. The company's policies and culture prioritize diversity at all levels and ensure fair treatment based on merit and potential rather than protected classifications factors (such as age, race, gender, religion). This deliberate and intentional effort is highlighted and supported, with continual accountability placed on appropriate parties to ensure forward momentum by the RedPeg Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), specifically Equally (LGBTQI+ Community and Allies), Parents of RedPeg,  ROC (RedPegsters of Color), and WOR (Women of RedPeg). What This Job is About:
The Graphic Designer is a skilled visual problem-solver who brings ideas to life across experiential, digital, and brand touchpoints. You’ll support concept development, execute polished graphic work, and contribute to high-quality design systems for campaigns, activations, and brand experiences.
This is a hands-on design role. You’ll collaborate with Art Directors, Creative Directors, Strategists, Production, and Client Services—taking visual direction and turning it into beautifully crafted, accurate, production-ready creative.
You’ll also help uphold the RedPeg creative standard on every project you touch, bringing craft and consistency to the work. Key responsibilities for this role include:
  • Create compelling visual systems for experiential campaigns, mobile tours, pop-ups, installations, hospitality builds, temporary and permanent environments, and large-scale event experiences.
  • Design large-format assets including signage, vehicle wraps, scenic graphics, stage artwork, footprint branding, environmental graphics, and wayfinding systems.
  • Develop artwork that accurately translates to fabrication, construction, and print production needs, ensuring feasibility while maintaining creative excellence.
  • Execute strong visual identities and graphic systems across multiple channels and formats, adapting brand guidelines into immersive, experiential applications.
  • Build mockups, visualization boards, branded toolkit elements, and design explorations that help communicate and sell creative ideas.
  • Design assets for digital and interactive touchpoints such as kiosks, touchscreens, microsites, presentation content, and social-ready visuals.
  • Produce front-end visuals that support experiential technologies, interactive moments, and digital components within event environments.
  • Build high-impact pitch decks, concept boards, mood boards, and case studies that clearly and cohesively communicate ideas and storytelling.
  • Visualize complex or abstract concepts through diagrams, infographics, systems, and other intuitive design approaches.
  • Support new business pitches and internal brainstorms through thoughtful visual development, concept exploration, and rapid ideation.
  • Manage multiple design assignments simultaneously from initial brief through final delivery, maintaining organization, accuracy, and strong attention to detail.
  • Collaborate closely with Creative, Strategy, Production, and Account teams to ensure alignment across every stage of a project.
  • Prepare clean, well-organized design files, production-ready artwork, and precise handoffs for vendors, fabricators, or cross-functional internal teams.
  • Foster a collaborative, positive, solutions-oriented creative environment rooted in craft, professionalism, and curiosity.
What You’re All About
  • BFA or BA in Graphic Design or related field (BFA preferred).
  • 1–3 years of professional design experience, ideally within an agency environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign).
  • A portfolio showing a range of work, ideally including experiential/environmental design, large-format assets, and presentation design.
  • Experience preparing files for print, fabrication, and vendor production workflows.
  • Strong layout, typography, and visual communication skills.
  • Ability to work quickly, manage competing priorities, and self-direct in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Comfortable taking feedback and collaborating across disciplines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients and cross-functional partners
  • General computer skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office and Google Suite
  • Superior attention to detail, organization and time management skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines at once
  • Ability to travel to be on-site at client activations as needed
  • Hunger to learn and roll up your sleeves
  • Willingness to contribute ideas, suggestions and opportunities for the agency’s continued innovation and evolution
