What is Intelligence Support Activity?

Intelligence Support Activity (ISA) is a highly secretive United States Army special operations unit specializing in gathering actionable intelligence for military operations. ISA conducts signals intelligence (SIGINT), human intelligence (HUMINT), and electronic surveillance in support of special mission units such as Delta Force and SEAL Team Six. The unit is known for its advanced technical capabilities and often operates in high-risk environments. Due to its covert nature, detailed information about ISA is classified, but it plays a critical role in providing real-time intelligence to support counterterrorism and other special operations missions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intelligence Support Activity professional?

To thrive in Intelligence Support Activity roles, you need expertise in intelligence analysis, data collection, and operational planning, often supported by a degree in a related field and relevant security clearances. Familiarity with intelligence software, geospatial analysis tools, and secure communication systems is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, discretion, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills in this field. These competencies are essential to ensure informed decision-making and operational success in high-stakes, security-driven environments.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Intelligence Support Activity roles, and how can they best prepare for them?

Professionals in Intelligence Support Activity roles often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing priorities, handling sensitive information, and operating under tight deadlines. To succeed, it's important to develop strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and adaptability. Effective communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams are also essential, as these roles frequently require close coordination with both military and civilian personnel. Staying current with intelligence tools and maintaining a high level of discretion can help professionals navigate the complexities of this field.

What is the difference between Intelligence Support Activity vs Intelligence Analyst?

Intelligence Support Activity (ISA) primarily involves covert military intelligence operations with specialized training and classified environments. In contrast, Intelligence Analysts typically work in open settings analyzing data for government agencies or contractors. While both roles require security clearances, ISA personnel focus on tactical, field-based intelligence, whereas analysts interpret information to support strategic decisions.

Job description

Description: About the Team

The Corporate Security team ensures the physical safety and security of the organization's assets, operations, and personnel. We are committed to maintaining a secure environment that enables our team to focus on advancing artificial intelligence in a responsible manner.

About the Role

As a Protective Intelligence & Threat Analyst, you will identify, assess, and communicate physical security threats affecting OpenAI, its personnel, executives, operations, and assets. You will leverage open-source intelligence, social media, investigative tools, and other information sources to assess violent or disruptive threats, geopolitical developments, and emerging risks relevant to the company.

The role will support a broad range of Protective Intelligence activities, including persons of interest investigations, behavioral threat assessment, executive and individual risk assessments, event and travel security assessments, and time-sensitive intelligence support to Corporate Security and cross-functional partners. You will turn complex and often incomplete information into clear assessments and actionable recommendations that help inform security and protective decisions.

We are seeking candidates with intelligence experience, particularly in protective intelligence, threat investigations, or behavioral threat assessment. Successful candidates will understand the intelligence cycle, OSINT investigative techniques, corporate physical security, risk management, and threat assessment, and will be comfortable operating independently in a fast-moving environment involving sensitive and occasionally high-profile matters.

This role could be based in San Francisco, CA, or may be a remote role for the right candidate. We use a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Relocation offered for those outside of the Bay Area.

In this role, you will:
  • Identify and investigate potential physical threats to OpenAI, its executives, employees, facilities, operations, and other assets using OSINT, investigative tools, and structured analytical techniques.
  • Conduct persons of interest (POI) and behavioral threat investigations to evaluate the credibility, intent, capability, and potential severity of identified threats and provide appropriate risk mitigation recommendations.
  • Conduct individual risk assessments and develop concise intelligence products and briefings that help Corporate Security and protective teams understand the evolving threat environment surrounding executives and other at-risk personnel.
  • Assess threats and security considerations associated with executive travel, company events, public appearances, meetings, and other activities requiring heightened protective awareness.
  • Provide timely intelligence support to Executive Protection and other Corporate Security partners, translating complex or rapidly evolving information into actionable protective recommendations.
  • Research and assess geopolitical, social, activist, and other emerging developments that may create physical security risks to OpenAI personnel, operations, infrastructure, or events.
  • Prepare and disseminate clear, decision-oriented intelligence assessments, threat briefings, and other products for senior leaders, protective teams, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Analyze and manage OSINT data collections in ways that improve discoverability, retrievability, analysis, and appropriate dissemination.
  • Leverage advanced analytical tools, automation, and emerging technologies to improve threat detection, investigations, assessments, and the broader intelligence cycle.
  • Maintain and improve methodologies, protocols, and procedures for protective intelligence collection, analysis, assessment, and dissemination.
  • Develop strong intelligence-sharing and working relationships across Corporate Security and with relevant internal and external partners.
You might thrive in this role if you have:
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in protective intelligence, threat investigations, intelligence analysis, behavioral threat assessment, executive protection intelligence, or a related field.
  • Strong judgment and the ability to assess incomplete or ambiguous information, distinguish signal from noise, and communicate risk with appropriate context and confidence.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skillsโ€ฆ
  • Experience assessing risks involving executives, high-profile individuals, events, travel, or other environments requiring time-sensitive security decision-making.
  • Technical proficiency or demonstrated interest in using APIs, automation, Python, data platforms, AI-enabled tools, and other technologies to improve intelligence collection, analysis, and threat detection.
  • The ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively within a small, dynamic, globally distributed team and across Communications, Government Relations, People, Legal, Information Security, Executive Protection, and other partners.
  • Familiarity with protective intelligence and threat management platforms such as Ontic and with structured behavioral threat assessment methodologies such as those used by ATAP.
  • Comfort supporting time-sensitive security matters, including occasional nights or weekends during significant incidents, events, travel, or crises.
