What are integrations in the context of a business or technology environment?

Integrations refer to the process of connecting different software applications, systems, or platforms so they can work together seamlessly. This often involves transferring data between systems, automating workflows, and ensuring that information is consistent and accessible across different tools. Integrations help organizations improve efficiency, reduce manual work, and provide a unified user experience. Common examples include connecting a CRM with an email marketing tool or syncing data between an e-commerce platform and inventory management software.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an integrations specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Integrations Specialist, you typically need expertise in systems integration, data mapping, API management, and a background in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with integration platforms (like MuleSoft or Dell Boomi), REST/SOAP APIs, and relevant certifications (such as MuleSoft Certified Developer) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving, communication, and project management skills help facilitate collaboration between technical and non-technical stakeholders. These competencies are crucial for ensuring seamless data flow and interoperability between business systems, which directly impacts operational efficiency and business outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in integrations roles, and how can they be overcome?

Professionals in Integrations roles often face challenges such as managing complex data mappings between disparate systems, ensuring data consistency, and troubleshooting connectivity or compatibility issues. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including software developers, business analysts, and IT support—is crucial for resolving these challenges efficiently. Proactive communication, strong documentation skills, and staying updated with the latest integration tools and protocols can help overcome these obstacles and ensure smooth project delivery.

Job description

Senior Backend Developer (Java / Integrations)
Location: Falls Church, VA (on-site in office, with partial telework flexibility)
Full-Time | Permanent
Salary Range: $100,000.00 ~ $150,000.00
BizFlow is seeking a Senior Backend Developer to build the integrations at the center of a large-scale enterprise modernization program and to serve as a technical leader for our development team. Our platform automates the workflows that run our customers' operations, and those workflows are only as good as the connections behind them. You will connect BizFlow applications to enterprise systems and data sources, own the backend services and data flows that make those connections reliable, mentor the developers around you, and carry your work through testing, deployment, and production support.
This is a hands-on senior role for someone strong in Java and SQL who enjoys integration work, and who wants to raise the level of the engineers around them. You will write code every day and you will also mentor and lead other developers, set technical direction, and work shoulder to shoulder with front-end developers, business analysts, project leadership, and the customer.
You do not need prior BizFlow experience. You do need to be able to learn our platform quickly and deeply, and we will invest in getting you there. If you have worked with any workflow or BPM platforms, you will find the concepts familiar and will come up to speed fast.
What You'll Do:
You are the engineer the program depends on when systems have to talk to each other, and the developer other engineers come to with hard problems. You will turn integration requirements into working, tested, supportable code, and you will help the rest of the team do the same.
Build and own enterprise integrations
  • Design, build, and maintain integrations between BizFlow workflow applications and customer enterprise systems.
  • Develop and consume REST and SOAP web services, working with JSON and XML payloads, including authentication, error handling, and retry logic.
  • Build backend services that are reliable, secure, and instrumented well enough to diagnose when something goes wrong.
Integrate data across systems
  • Build the data mappings, transformations, and validation logic that keep information consistent as it moves between systems.
  • Write and tune complex SQL, work with relational schemas, and optimize queries and stored procedures for performance.
  • Support data migration and synchronization, and protect data integrity throughout.
Mentor and lead the development team
  • Mentor developers through code review, pairing, and day-to-day coaching, and help them grow into stronger engineers.
  • Provide technical direction on a workstream: break down the work, guide design decisions, and keep the team to a consistent standard.
  • Set and uphold backend and integration standards, and lead design and code reviews.
  • Document integration designs, configurations, and runbooks so the team can support what you build.
Partner across the team and with the customer
  • Work hand in hand with front-end developers so that the services and data you build fit cleanly with the user experience they are creating.
  • Partner with business analysts to turn requirements into sound technical designs, and flag gaps or risks early while they are still cheap to fix.
  • Work with the program and project managers on estimates, sequencing, dependencies, and status, so the plan reflects technical reality.
  • Engage directly with customer technical staff on integration design, environment questions, and troubleshooting, and explain technical trade-offs in language a non-technical stakeholder can act on.
Carry your work through testing, deployment, and support
  • Write unit and integration tests, and support QA and User Acceptance Testing by turning around defects quickly.
  • Support builds, environment configuration, and deployments across development, test, and production.
  • Troubleshoot production issues across the application, integration, database, and server layers, and drive them to root cause.
What You'll Work With:
Our stack is practical rather than trendy. We care more that you are strong in the fundamentals than that you have used every tool on this list.
  • Languages and Frameworks: Java (Java 11+), Spring Framework, Spring Boot, Hibernate/JPA, Querydsl, Spring Integration (or Apache Camel)
  • Platform: BizFlow M and BizFlow AppDev (Our Low-code Workflow & BPM Solutions), Process Automation platform
  • Data & Persistence: Relational Databases (Oracle, MS SQL Server), Advanced/Hands-on SQL (Query Optimization, Stored Procedures), Spring Data JPA
  • Integration & Messaging: RESTful APIs, SOAP Web Services, gRPC, JSON/XML Data Parsing & Validation, Enterprise Systems Integration (HR, ERP, CRM platforms), Single Sign On (SAML, OAuth 2.0), API Gateways & Security (JWT, mTLS), Security Vulnerability (OWASP)
  • Environments & Infrastructure: Windows & Linux Servers, Web Application Servers (Tomcat, WildFly/JBoss), Docker Containers, AWS/Cloud Infrastructure, Clustering/High Availability System
  • Tooling & Operations: Git/GitHub, Jira, Confluence, SharePoint, Postman, CI/CD Tools (Jenkins, GitHub Actions)
Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 10+ years of professional backend development experience, with strong hands-on Java.
  • Strong SQL: writing complex queries, working with relational schemas, and tuning for performance.
  • Demonstrated experience building production integrations between enterprise systems using REST and SOAP web services and APIs.
  • Experience mentoring or leading developers, including code review and providing technical direction on a workstream.
  • Experience with data integration work: mapping, transformation, validation, and migration across systems.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across the application, integration, database, and server layers.
  • The ability to learn a new platform quickly and deeply, including the BizFlow platform.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, including working directly with front-end developers, business analysts, project leadership, and customer stakeholders.
  • US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience with a workflow, BPM, or low-code platform such as BizFlow, Appian, Pega, Mendix, or ServiceNow.
  • Familiarity with BPMN 2.0, workflow engines, and business process modeling concepts.
  • Experience integrating with enterprise platforms such as Salesforce, Microsoft Power Platform, or major HR and ERP systems.
  • Working familiarity with front-end technologies, in order to design clean APIs and collaborate effectively with UI developers.
  • Experience with message queues, batch processing, or event-driven integration patterns.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tooling, automated deployment pipelines, and containerization.
  • Experience delivering in regulated or compliance-heavy environments, including accessibility standards such as Section 508.
  • Domain experience in HR, healthcare, public sector, or other complex operating environments.
Your First 90 Days:
  • By day 30, you will know your way around the BizFlow platform and the existing application landscape, have your environments running, have met the analysts and developers you will work with, and have delivered your first change.
  • By day 60, you will own an integration end to end, from design through testing, and be an active voice in code review.
  • By day 90, you will be the go-to engineer for one or more enterprise system integrations, troubleshooting production issues on your own, and providing technical direction to other developers on the program.
Why join us:
BizFlow is a low-code / no-code software company with over two decades of delivering process automation and workflow solutions to government and commercial clients. Our platform, BizFlow M, helps organizations build, enhance, and automate business processes without heavy coding.
This role sits at the technical center of a significant modernization program. The integrations you build are what make the program work, and you will own them end to end rather than inherit a narrow slice. You will also shape how the rest of the team builds, with direct access to the analysts, project leaders, and customer stakeholders making the decisions. If you want senior engineering scope and technical influence on a small team where your work is visible, this is a place to do it.
BizFlow is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or protected Veteran status.
